JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision provides crisis intervention and other services to victims of violent crimes, in addition to working with volunteers from the community to provide immediate and follow up services to victims.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

• Provide crisis intervention/crisis counseling to victims of violent crime in person or by telephone.

• Review and assess police reports and determine appropriate level of service.

• Maintain case notes, documentation, data entry, and assist victims with paperwork on scene and in the office.

• Develop alternative solutions to problems, to evaluate courses of actions, and formulate appropriate recommendations for decisions.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:

• Train and supervise volunteer and interns.

• Transport victims to shelters and court appearances.

• Consult with patrol officers.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

• Knowledge of crisis intervention and crisis counseling theory and intervention, including intervention with traumatic grief.

• Knowledge of state laws pertaining to victims of violent crime, including their rights and law enforcement responsibilities to victims.

• Knowledge of issues related to domestic violence, victimology, and the criminal justice system.

• Knowledge of mental health diagnosis and intervention with adults and children, substance abuse, and issues related to persons with disabilities.

• Knowledge of the criminal justice system and community social services and resources.

• Knowledge of supervisory and management techniques and theories.

• Knowledge of community resources available to victims.

• Skill in needs assessment and case management.

• Skill in communicating with other employees, volunteers, victims, the public and members of other community agencies by written and oral means.

• Skill in collecting and compiling data for statistical reporting purposes.

• Skill in crisis intervention in highly stressful situations.

• Ability to work independent of specific instructions.

• Ability to participate in multidisciplinary teams, committees, and projects.

• Ability to deal in a professional manner with individuals in crisis situations and always maintain professional boundaries.

• Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication and make fine discriminations in sound.

• Ability to operate a variety of office equipment, including but not limited to, PC, telephone, fax machine, laptop, computer, portable radio and copier.

• Ability to operate a motor vehicle safely with the general public in all conditions.

• Ability to perform a variety of physical skills including but not limited to carrying, seeing, sorting, writing and climbing stairs.

• Ability to work outdoors occasionally.

• Ability to be flexible in coverage for operation including but not limited to working on holidays and managing the on-call phone.

Qualifying Education and Experience:

• Master’s degree in social work, Psychology, Criminal Justice or related field.

• One year experience in crisis intervention, critical incident, and/or victims services.

• Or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

• Possession of a valid Texas Operator's License, Class C. including good driving record.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Knowledge of crisis intervention

• Knowledge and skilled at recognizing crisis counseling theory

• Knowledge and skills of laws regarding victims of crime.

Preferred Education and Experience:

• Professional license in Social Work, Counseling, or Marriage and Family

• Mental Health License Preferred (LCSW, LPC, LMFT, LMSW or related licensure).
