Thesis “Optimizing the combination of several standoff measurements and 3Dpointclouds” (m/f/d)

Rosenxt inspects water pipelines with inline inspection robots with several sensor technologies onboard of the robot. Based on these several sensor methods, there are multiple measurements of the RobotToWall standoff (with variating physical locations on the tool, typical measurement inaccuracies and sampling intervals). To be able to properly determine pipeline geometric parameters (like diameter, ovality, dentsizes etc) from these several measurement systems, we're aiming for first determining an optimal combined 3D pointcloud of the internal pipeline geometry from all these single sensor systems. The input datasets can be either sensor to pipewall standoff measurements at specific intervals along the pipeline, or partial (referenced) snapshot 3Dpointclouds which need to be integrated in a main 3Dpointcloud. The single standoff measurements needs to be compensated by a (pre-known) angle misalignment between the robot- body and the Pipeline. Finally for every single sample in the pointcloud a geometric accuracy level needs to be provided.

What you can expect:

  • The thesis shall explore the feasibilities of the several methods to combine several standoff measurements (from various nature) into a final 3D pointcloud which is the best combination of all single measurements and representing the 3D inner pipeline wall geometry as accurate as possible. This needs to be integrated into one final, optimal method. Validation of the method can be done by either simulated data or by manually preparing a high quality 3D geometric measurement of one single spool.
