Join us as a Survey Manager and be responsible for measuring all excavations made by the Operations and keeping the Operational plans up to date as well as liaising with third parties when requests are made to mine close to the boundaries as well as ensuring the operation complies with legislation

Thungela Resources [Thungela means “to ignite” in isiZulu] is a leading South African thermal coal business, focused exclusively on thermal coal production.  It is one of the largest pure-play producers and exporters of thermal coal in South Africa based on aggregate coal reserves and marketable coal production. Thungela focuses on exporting its thermal coal portfolio mainly to the Indian, Asian, Southeast Asian, Middle East and North African markets.

  • Ensure that legal requirements, codes of practices, group standards, procedures and policies are updated, implemented, adhered to and that changes to legal requirements are communicated
  • Ensure appropriate appointments in terms of the Mine, Health and Safety Act are in place
  • Report on production figures through preparing reports on actual production figures and reporting on mining plans and highlight actual versus planned areas as well as submitting reports on daily, weekly and monthly basis
  • Liaise with stakeholders regarding mining activities and between Survey Department and all other mining departments
  • Stake out mine plan for Mining Department
  • Ensure the effectiveness of all Survey Systems through operate in compliance with established procedures and data structures
  • Effective people management, ensuring that roles are well defined and clarified and that competencies and learning paths are developed to human capacity and capability
  • Evaluate requirements of departmental staff, ensure that individuals are provided with the correct development opportunities, evaluate training courses as well as oversee the development of training material
  • Ensure that costs allocated for engineering tasks within specified operation are controlled within the prescribed budget and compares with internationally accepted benchmarks
  • Ensure cost saving
  • Mine Surveyors certificate of competency
  • Registration as Mine Surveyor with PLATO (Advantageous)
  • B Tech / Diploma / Degree in Mine Surveying NQF 7 (Advantageous)
  • Valid Driver’s Licence

Experience

  • Extensive experience in the Mine Surveying field

Proficient knowledge of mining and other relevant legislation applicable to Thungela Resources incl:

  • In depth knowledge of Mine Health and Safety Act, Minerals and Petroleum Act and Water Act
  • Up to date with new survey technology
  • Understanding of mining surveying and engineering survey principles
  • Expertise in relevant software: ability to set up and maintain system
  • Knowledge in Land Management
