Job Summary
The Substitute Teacher is responsible for providing classroom instruction and supervision in the absence of the regular classroom teacher. This role ensures continuity of learning by implementing lesson plans, maintaining a positive classroom environment, and supporting student success across a variety of grade levels and subject areas. Substitute Teachers are expected to promote student safety, engagement, and academic progress while following school policies and procedures.
Job Responsibilities
Classroom Instruction
- Implement lesson plans and instructional materials provided by the regular teacher or school administration.
- Deliver engaging instruction using appropriate teaching strategies, classroom technology, and educational resources.
- Adapt instructional activities as needed to meet the diverse learning needs of students.
- Ensure instructional continuity and maintain established classroom routines.
Classroom Management
- Foster a safe, respectful, and productive learning environment.
- Maintain appropriate classroom discipline in accordance with school policies and procedures.
- Effectively manage student behavior and address classroom disruptions using positive behavior management techniques.
Student Engagement
- Encourage active participation and engagement in classroom activities.
- Provide guidance and support to help students understand assignments and learning objectives.
- Promote a positive and inclusive classroom culture.
Assessment and Reporting
- Monitor student participation and progress throughout the school day.
- Administer quizzes, tests, and other assessments as directed.
- Leave detailed notes regarding completed lessons, student progress, attendance, and any classroom concerns for the regular teacher or school administration.
Communication
- Communicate professionally with students, teachers, administrators, and school staff.
- Report student concerns, behavioral issues, accidents, or other significant incidents to the appropriate personnel in a timely manner.
Student Safety
- Ensure the physical, emotional, and social well-being of students throughout the school day.
- Follow all school safety procedures, emergency protocols, and health guidelines.
- Maintain appropriate supervision of students during instructional and non-instructional periods as assigned.
Job Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Bachelor's degree in Education or a related field preferred.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent classroom management and organizational abilities.
- Ability to adapt quickly to different grade levels, subjects, and classroom environments.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build positive relationships with students and staff.
- Working knowledge of classroom technology and instructional tools.
- Ability to follow lesson plans independently while exercising sound judgment and professionalism.
- Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and adhering to school policies and procedures.
