STUDENT ASSISTANT EMPLOYEE JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Under the supervision of the Computer Labs Coordinator, the Student Computer Lab Technician is responsible for providing friendly customer service, support and assistance to all patrons using the Computer Lab. 

 

JOB DUTIES:

·         Provides a welcoming and inclusive environment to all students, faculty, staff and guest of the University Student Union (USU) and CSUN.

·         Provides friendly information and assistance to students and guests of the USU.

·         Assists and registers patrons for lab access and computer workshop classes.

·         Enforces Computer Lab/USU policies and procedures.

·         Provides Computer Lab patrons with rental equipment services.

·         Provides Computer Lab patrons with one on one assistance in using various computer software programs, internet, e-mail and other computer related services.

·         Trouble-shoots computer hardware and software problems.

·         Maintains appropriate safety and security standards in lab area.

·         Manages and eases patron lines.

·         Cleans and maintains computer and printer equipment.

·         Maintains check-in/check-out list and usage counts.

·         Generates written and detailed reports occurring during work shifts.

·         Assists in monitoring and maintaining computer lab inventory.

·         Assists in other operational functions of the USU.

·         Assists with computer equipment and software training for USU employees.

·         Assists with, implements and facilitates computer training classes for CSUN students.

·         Other duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION

Must be a currently enrolled CSUN student

EXPERIENCE

Previous related experience and/or specialized education required.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

·         Ability to type at least 45 words per minute

·         Must possess a minimum of 6 months clerical experience

·         Must have knowledge of modern office procedures

·         Excellent verbal and written communication and customer service skills required

·         Effective public speaking skills

·         Ability to maintain a neat appearance and courteous disposition

·         Excellent computer skills required, including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Microsoft Excel

·         Ability to execute written correspondence, reports and organize data accurately

·         Ability to make independent decisions and make recommendations

·         Strong verbal communication skills required, including ability to share relevant information, ask questions, listen well and respond appropriately

·         Strong written communication skills required, including composition, grammar, spelling and punctuation

·         Ability to identify problems and/or concerns relative to position of employment, and recommend viable solutions

·         Ability to effectively coordinate multiple tasks and adhere to deadlines

·         Ability to adhere to work rules, follow directions, use time effectively and work productively without close supervision

·         Ability to work in a culturally diverse, ethnically pluralistic environment

·         Basic knowledge in the proper use, care, operation and safety procedures of hand tools and power tools such as saws, grinders, drills, etc. (if applicable)

·         Understanding of design and printing a plus (if applicable)

·         Ability to use Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop a plus

·         Ability to lift up to 65 lbs. (if applicable)

·         Cross-platform knowledge of PC and Macintosh computers and systems (if applicable)

·         Experience with Macintosh and PC word processing, spread-sheet, database, desk-top publishing and graphic software programs. (if applicable)

SUPERVISION:

Supervision is provided by the Computer Lab Coordinator. 

 

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is primarily performed in a temperature-controlled office environment. Daily contact with members of the campus community, including students, faculty, staff, administrators and guests, is required. In addition to regularly assigned work schedule Monday-Friday, must possess an ability and willingness to work some weekends, academic interim, and break periods as needed; must be flexible, adaptable, and readily able to adjust to changes in work environment.
