Software Engineer, Controls & Automation
Layup Parts
Apply to this jobAt Layup Parts, we're developing the technology that will build the future.
We're a manufacturing technology company replacing months of lead time with days, using proprietary software, automation, and advanced manufacturing systems built for speed. Our customers are inventing what's next, in aerospace, defense, robotics, and beyond. To keep up with them, manufacturing has to change. That's what we're building.
We're looking for a Controls/Automation Software Engineer to join our robotics and software team as a core support and build resources across our machine automation systems — ovens, autoclaves, and other machine integrations into our broader production system. You'll be an owner of robotics team outputs once they move from R&D into production, acting as the support function that keeps automated systems running, resolves field issues, and keeps development features moving forward.
What You'll Do
- Serve as a core support and build resource across the robotics and automation software team
- Own machine automation systems in production, including ovens, autoclaves, and other integrated equipment
- Take ownership of robotics team outputs once R&D work transitions into production
- Field and resolve issues from automated production systems, developing lasting solutions rather than one-off fixes
- Keep development of new automation features moving alongside support work
What We're Looking For
- 3+ years of software engineering experience, with strong C++ skills
- Experience with some form of controls systems: factory automation, robotics, automotive systems, avionics, or other physical systems controlled by software
- Comfortable working directly with hardware and machine interfaces, not just application-layer software
- Strong debugging and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to trace issues across both software and the physical systems they control
- Able to work independently in a fast-paced environment with limited existing documentation or structure
- Solid understanding of how software interacts with sensors, actuators, and feedback loops in a controlled system
- Comfortable being a support resource for production issues while also carrying forward new development work
Bonus Points
- Robotics experience
- PLC experience (Beckhoff, Siemens, Allen-Bradley, or similar)
- Experience with real-time or embedded systems
- Experience with manufacturing execution systems (MES) or other factory-floor software
- Familiarity with communication protocols common in industrial settings
- Manufacturing or production environment experience
- Experience in a startup or small-team environment
Compensation (from employer):
140000–160000 USD per year
