Overview of the role

The SMSF Accountant is responsible for the preparation, administration, and compliance of Self-Managed Superannuation Funds (SMSFs) in accordance with Australian superannuation and taxation laws. This role requires a strong understanding of SMSF legislation, tax compliance and financial reporting. 

Main duties include:

SMSF Compliance & Administratio

  • Prepare annual financial statements for SMSFs, including operating statements and member balances. 
  • Complete and lodge SMSF annual returns (SAR) with the ATO. 
  • Ensure compliance with the Superannuation Industry (Supervision) Act (SIS Act) and regulations. 
  • Maintain accurate fund records, including trust deeds, investment strategies, and minutes. 
  • Monitor contribution caps, pension requirements, and minimum drawdowns. 
  • Prepare business activity statements quarterly  
  • Prepare detailed workpapers to reconcile the SMSF Financial Statements for Audit purposes 

Taxation & Reporting 

  • Prepare SMSF tax calculations and ensure timely lodgement. 
  • Manage GST, PAYG, and other relevant tax obligations where applicable. 

Investment & Transaction Processing 

  • Record and reconcile investment transactions including shares, property, managed funds, and alternative assets. 
  • Ensure proper classification and valuation of investments. 
  • Review and reconcile bank accounts, broker statements, and other financial data. 

Regulatory Updates & Continuous Improvement 

  • Stay up to date with changes in superannuation and tax legislation. 
  • Suggest process improvements to enhance efficiency and compliance. 
  • Assist with internal training and knowledge sharing. 

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field. 
  • CA, CPA, or progress towards professional qualification. 
  • Minimum 2–5 years’ experience in SMSF accounting or public practice. 
  • Strong knowledge of Australian superannuation legislation and tax law. 
  • Experience with Class 360 SMSF software. 
  • Experience with Xero Practice Manager and FYI Docs (not essential) 
  • High attention to detail and strong analytical skills. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
