Senior System Quality Engineer
Terawatt Infrastructure
Apply to this jobOur Technology
Terawatt is not a traditional infrastructure operator. Our technology platform transforms a portfolio of sites into a reliable, intelligent network — through advanced power management, operational optimization, and data-driven systems that back our customers with hard performance guarantees. That's what makes us a de-risked operator and a category-defining company.
We sit at a rare intersection: software, hardware, real estate, energy systems, and live site operations. The work is concrete and the stakes are real. The code you write today runs physical infrastructure tomorrow. You'll build systems that orchestrate megawatts of power across hundreds of chargers, ingest millions of telemetry events per day, and keep autonomous fleets, rideshare vehicles, and heavy-duty trucks moving — in real time.
Role Description
As a member of the Terawatt technology team in the role of Systems Quality Engineer you will own the processes and data that keep our charging systems performing to spec: defining what "good" looks like, measuring against it, and driving the engineering and operations teams to close the gap when it doesn't. You will be responsible for validating the quality and performance of our full stack products, from End-to-End electrical hardware and software interactions, with a focus on high-power EV charging solutions and energy management systems. This role sits inside the technical organization with strong ties to field operations, software, and hardware procurement.
Core Responsibilities
-
Define and maintain quality standards for Terawatt's charging systems, uptime thresholds, fault rates, charge session success rates, hardware failure modes, and build the measurement infrastructure to track them
-
Contribute to a product-driven engineering culture that champions diverse ideas and bottom-up innovation
-
Analyze field performance data to identify systemic failures, distinguish one-off events from recurring defect patterns, and prioritize engineering response accordingly
-
Develop and implement comprehensive QA testing standards, specifically focused on OCPP and ISO 15118 communication protocols and system logs
-
Triage and perform advanced root cause analysis on product or system issues, using network analysis tools like Wireshark and .pcap files to debug vehicle-to-charger communication and complex field failures
-
Collaborate closely with vendors to manage and support resolution of critical firmware, hardware, and integration defects, ensuring alignment with technical specifications and SLAs for timely delivery and reliable operation of new features
-
Ensure lab-to-site validation consistency by verifying that lab configurations and units exactly match field deployments to mitigate risks of unforeseen operational differences
-
Develop and maintain inspection protocols for new site commissioning; ensure sites are handed off to operations meeting defined quality gates
-
Collaborate with Operations to define and validate Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) at the lab before deployment, and coordinate logistics for the delivery and return of large EVSE test units
-
Contribute to the quality and reliability planning for charging & energy management systems, including local site energy management infrastructure (energy meters, local controllers, and DERs like BESS & Solar)
-
Collaborate with Terawatt Operations and other stakeholders to ensure highly reliable operations and quality customer experiences at our charging facilities
Minimum Qualifications
-
5+ years in a quality engineering, reliability engineering, or systems engineering role — ideally in power electronics, energy storage, EV charging, or industrial electrical equipment
-
Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, system architecture diagrams, and hardware test reports
-
Expertise in high-voltage and low-power electrical systems, including deep, protocol-level debugging of complex in-field customer issues in the EV charging space.
-
Demonstrated hands-on debugging expertise of communication protocols between EV & EVSE including ISO 15118-2 & 20, DIN 70121, and OCPP protocols.
-
Experience in practical understanding of CCS, NACS, MCS standards
-
Hands-on experience validating local site energy management infrastructure including energy meters, local controllers, load limiting, and complex grid interactions with DERs (BESS & Solar).
-
Strong communication skills to collaborate effectively in a dynamic, cross-functional remote work environment
-
Ability to work with ambiguity, manage multiple projects and independently collaborate with internal teams and external partners
-
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or a related field
- Willingness to work onsite at our lab in Baldwin Park, CA
Preferred Qualifications
-
Working knowledge of OCPI & OCPP 2.* standards
-
Familiarity with charge management systems and fleet telematics data
-
Working experience with Hardware and IoT integrations into backend services
-
Hands-on experience with EV/EVSE Emulator systems for functional and integration testing
-
Hands-on experience with automation in Python and integrating with CI/CD pipelines
