Job description

About the Company

Our client is a well-established and highly respected sitework contractor serving the Charleston market. Known for delivering high-quality earthwork, grading, utilities, excavation, and site development projects, the company has built a reputation for exceptional client service, operational excellence, and long-term relationships.

With a strong backlog of work and continued growth, the company is seeking a senior leader who is interested in more than simply managing projects. This opportunity is designed for someone looking to take the next step into executive operations leadership and play a key role in the company's future.

About the Position

Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Project Manager to oversee multiple sitework construction projects while preparing to transition into an Operations Manager role within approximately 12 to 24 months.

This position offers a unique succession planning opportunity. The successful candidate will initially focus on leading project execution, mentoring project teams, and learning the company's operational systems, processes, and culture. As they become established within the organization, they will assume increasing operational responsibilities as the current owner transitions day-to-day operations in order to focus on strategic growth and business development.

This is an outstanding opportunity for an experienced project management professional who is ready to move into executive leadership while helping shape the future of a growing organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead multiple sitework construction projects from preconstruction through closeout.
  • Manage project budgets, schedules, subcontractors, procurement, and client relationships.
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to project managers, engineers, and field teams.
  • Collaborate closely with estimating and field operations to ensure successful project delivery.
  • Monitor project financial performance and implement strategies to maximize profitability.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with owners, developers, engineers, and subcontractors.
  • Ensure projects meet quality, safety, and schedule expectations.
  • Work directly with company leadership to learn operational systems and management processes.
  • Gradually assume broader operational responsibilities in preparation for transitioning into the Operations Manager role.

Requirements

  • Extensive project management experience within sitework, heavy civil, excavation, grading, underground utilities, or land development construction.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while delivering strong financial results.
  • Strong knowledge of project scheduling, estimating, budgeting, and contract administration.
  • Experience leading project teams and developing junior staff.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
  • Strong business acumen with an interest in operational leadership.
  • Ability to build lasting relationships with clients, subcontractors, and internal teams.
  • A proactive, collaborative leadership style with a long-term career mindset.
  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field is preferred but not required based on relevant experience.

Benefits

  • Base salary of $150,000–$180,000, depending on experience
  • Performance-based bonus program
  • Company vehicle or vehicle allowance
  • Comprehensive benefits package
  • Paid time off and company holidays
  • Retirement savings plan
  • Significant opportunity for career advancement into an Operations Manager leadership position within 12–24 months
  • Long-term opportunity to help guide the strategic growth of an established and respected contractor
