You’ll be joining the China Trust & Care team, part of Canva’s CJKI Group within the International Platform & Growth Engineering Subgroup. We work closely with teams across product, engineering, operations, and growth to ensure Canva delivers a safe, reliable, and locally relevant experience for users in the Chinese market. Your mission is to help maintain a trusted platform by supporting core business operations, enhancing user safety and quality, and building systems that enable a seamless experience for our users in China.

About the Role/Specialty

We’re looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to drive the design and development of services that power trust, safety, and core platform capabilities for Canva in China. This is a high-impact, high-autonomy role that requires a strong systems mindset and the ability to work cross-functionally with product managers, designers, data scientists, and engineering teams. You’ll play a key role in shaping scalable architectures, improving platform reliability, and building backend services that help deliver a safe, trusted, and high-quality user experience while supporting critical business operations in China. You’ll gain hands-on experience writing reusable, maintainable code and technical documentation while leading projects, driving technical initiatives, and collaborating across multiple teams. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced engineer who excels at communication and designing resilient systems that balance simplicity, flexibility, and long-term scalability.

• Design, build, and maintain backend services and APIs that power Trust & Care capabilities and core platform experiences for users in China.

• Develop scalable systems that support platform safety, trust, compliance, and operational workflows while enabling sustainable business growth.

• Work closely with product managers, designers, operations, and cross-functional engineering teams to understand user needs, regulatory requirements, and business priorities.

• Improve the reliability, scalability, performance, and observability of critical backend services supporting the China platform.

• Lead technical discovery, architecture design, and implementation of high-impact projects, balancing short-term delivery with long-term platform evolution.

• Mentor engineers, share technical expertise, and foster a culture of engineering excellence through code reviews, technical discussions, and collaborative problem solving.

• Strong backend development experience, ideally with Java or similar languages.

• A systems thinker — you understand how to build reliable, maintainable, and scalable distributed systems.

• Experience working with service-to-service APIs, data enrichment pipelines, or intelligent routing systems is a strong plus.

• A product mindset — you think beyond the code and care deeply about the user experience, both for end-users and internal support specialists.

• Proven ability to lead projects end-to-end and collaborate cross-functionally with engineering, product, and operations teams.

• Experience in support platforms, workflow orchestration, or customer-facing systems is beneficial but not required.
