Position Summary

HASI is currently seeking a Senior Analyst or Associate with experience in asset-based lending, renewable energy, or structured finance to join our team in either Annapolis, MD or New York City.  This individual will work in the Investment Group on the Credit Team to support the origination, structuring, and growth of HASI’s investment portfolio. The types of investments will primarily include energy efficiency projects, while also focusing on other technology sectors. The core responsibilities of the role will include supporting the bidding, conversion, and closing processes as well as the performing key tasks during the structuring, negotiation, and execution of transactions. The role will require working within a deal team, reporting up to a transaction lead, as well as communicating across internal business units to complete the transaction responsibilities.

 

Responsibilities

Investing Activities

  • Support transactions through the entire lifecycle working closely with a transaction lead, from initial qualification and bidding to conversion and due diligence, and ultimately through the documentation and closing process. Be proactive to advance tasks and workstreams through the transaction cycle.
  • Build and manage financial models, including underlying project operating proformas, to analyze and structure investments and evaluate associated risks.  Build and manage portfolio models, incorporating underlying project/partnership models.  Work closely with internal colleagues supporting all facets of investment execution, from initial qualification evaluation, term sheet development, internal investment proposal, due diligence, and documentation closing.
  • Undertake an initial transaction assessment within the parameters of the Credit Team’s investment goals and communicate with the transaction lead to help determine an investment recommendation. Execute tasks that are part of a work plan to pursue the transaction and help obtain a mandate from the client.
  • Perform key due diligence tasks for investments including summarizing terms in underlying project agreements such as service contracts, construction agreements, and financing agreements. Perform credit analysis on transaction counterparties and communicate findings to transaction lead so that these can be incorporated into transaction structure and documentation recommendations.
  • Monitor and coordinate with transaction lead on communications with external stakeholders including clients, transaction counsel, and leverage partners.

 

Capital Markets Activities

  • Support the process of identifying and executing with leverage partners for transactions, including assisting to organize and support the documentation process, facilitating due diligence requests, supporting the closing process, and overseeing the financial model.

Portfolio Management

  • Work closely with the members of the Portfolio Management team to share transaction knowledge to assist in commercial decision making relating to post closing activities. Support the servicing of assets including modifications and consents in coordination with transaction lead.
  • Collaborate with the Risk Management team to communicate the risk considerations and associated mitigants for both specific transactions and broadly for the portfolio.

 

Specific Recommended Knowledge and Skills

  • Experience in asset-based lending, structured finance, and/or securitization markets. A familiarity with associated documentation, transaction structures, and overall execution a plus.
  • Strong financial modeling skills with demonstrable experience working with debt and/or project finance models, and ability to manipulate and refine models.
  • Ability to take ownership of key tasks that support workstreams necessary to advance transactions. Confidence to collaborate with transaction lead and communicate with internal colleagues on tasks and workflows necessary to drive a project forward.
  • Dependable and reliable, excellent at taking initiative and being productive without supervision, and being a supportive team member.
  • Familiarity with energy infrastructure, energy service companies, and/or climate investing preferred.

 

Education and Prior work Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year institution.
  • 2-4 years of experience in asset-based lending, structured finance and/or securitization.
  • Strong MS Excel financial modeling and data mining skills, with demonstrable experience working with complex models.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability and desire to work in a fast-paced, innovative, entrepreneurial environment

  • Self-starter, collaborative team player, attention to detail
