Research Fellow or Senior Research Fellow – Biostatistician / Epidemiologist

• Full time fixed term until 31 December 2029, with possibility of extension

• Base Salary starting at $150,461 (level C) or $122,830 (level B) + 17% superannuation 

About the opportunity

The Heat and Health Research Centre is a multi-disciplinary team of researchers striving to understand the causative pathways of – and develop evidence-based solutions for – the health impacts of heat exposure across the human lifespan.  The Heat and Health Research Centre’s purpose is to build resilience to a warming planet across the human lifespan by undertaking research that understands the underlying mechanisms of heat vulnerability.

We have an opportunity for a Research Fellow (level B) or Senior Research Fellow (level C) Biostatistician/Epidemiologist to work at the intersection of environmental epidemiology, heat stress and human health. This position will have a specific focus on the impacts of extreme heat and hot weather on human health outcomes, as well as on all sectors of the community and associated health services.  This position will be based at the Heat and Health Research Centre, Camperdown Campus.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

• Lead day-to-day epidemiological analysis and research activities in the Heat and Health Research Centre

• Engage in collaborative epidemiological research activities on heat and health with the Leeder Centre for Health Policy, Economics and Data

• Conceive and execute new and high-impact epidemiological research projects on heat and health integrating human physiological models

• Conduct advanced statistical and geospatial analysis using linked meteorological, environmental, spatial, physiological and human health data

•  Conduct data preparation and management of spatial, environmental and administrative health datasets

• Contribute to the development of statistical analysis plans, preparation of results, visualisation and reporting of research to various audiences

• Collaborate and liaise with a multidisciplinary team of academics, clinicians, consumers, policy makers and other stakeholders

• Lead the development of new funding applications, and support other research projects within the Centre

• Uphold professional conduct and standards in all interactions with colleagues and stakeholders

• Attend team and project meetings and maintain regular communication with senior project leads and other professional and academic staff within the Centre.

• Undertake other duties and contribute to projects appropriate within the classification level as required.

About you

• Hold a PhD qualification in epidemiology, statistics, biostatistics, public health, geography or a related degree with a strong component in epidemiology or biostatistics

• Research experience in the broad area of environmental epidemiology, preferably with a focus on climate change

• A strong track record of first-author publications (or a developing track record for level B) in high-impact international peer-reviewed journals

• Experience of grant submissions and external funding acquisition

• Experience in data preparation, data management, and analysis of large, population-based linked administrative health and clinical datasets

• Advanced biostatistical analytical skills, e.g., geospatial analysis, multilevel or generalised models, causal inference methods

• Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills to a wide range of audiences

• Proven ability to work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary team of researchers while demonstrating respect and an understanding of the value other disciplines can contribute to developing comprehensive solutions to complex problems.
