Air Traffic Management Research Institute (ATMRI) is a research institute at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, supported by the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS). The key objective of ATMRI is to support research and innovation in air traffic management. We are looking for a Research Fellow to conduct research on human factors and cognitive systems in air traffic management (ATM), with a focus on operator cognitive load, situational awareness, and decision-support interfaces for air traffic controllers. The role will involve designing and evaluating human-in-the-loop tools using methods such as eye-tracking, physiological sensing, and uncertainty visualization, contributing to the advancement of research and innovation at Nanyang Technological University.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research on human factors and cognitive systems approaches to support air traffic management studies and applications.

  • Design, develop, and evaluate decision-support interfaces and operator-facing tools using operational and simulated data.

  • Support research activities on controller cognitive load, situational awareness, and resilience under current and future ATM concepts.

  • Work collaboratively with researchers and engineers to develop prototype solutions and human-in-the-loop evaluation frameworks.

  • Conduct user studies and analyse results (e.g. eye-tracking, physiological sensing) to assess the performance and usability of developed tools in realistic operational scenarios.

  • Prepare technical reports, research papers, and project deliverables, and participate in project meetings and reviews.

  • Publish research findings in top-tier journals and conferences in relevant fields (e.g. human-computer interaction, human factors, ATM).

  • Contribute to research proposals, technical documentation, and other project-related activities as required.

Job Requirements:

  • PhD qualification in Human-Computer Interaction, Cognitive Science, Human Factors, Air Traffic Management, Transport, or other related fields.

  • At least one (1) year of relevant research experience in human factors, cognitive systems, or related technical research roles, ideally within transport, aviation, or other safety-critical operational domains.

  • Familiarity with research related to cognitive load assessment, decision-support interfaces, or human-in-the-loop systems for complex operational environments (e.g. air traffic management, control rooms).

  • Good written and oral communication skills, with the ability to prepare technical reports and academic publications.

  • Proficiency in job-specific technical skills, including programming for research and data analysis purposes (e.g. Python or similar languages), experience with eye-tracking or physiological sensing methods, as well as strong numerical and analytical skills.

  • Competent in general research-related skills and professional attributes, including problem-solving and analytical thinking.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively, develop solutions under defined timelines, and demonstrate good organisational and time management skills.
