Job description

The Institute of Catastrophe Risk Management (ICRM) was launched in January 2010 and aims to be the first multi-disciplinary and leading catastrophe risk management research institute of its kind in Asia. The Institute aims to help the regional and international communities to better understand the characteristics of Asia’s risks related to natural disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, typhoons, floods and droughts.

We are looking for a Research Fellow in Earthquake Engineer to support ICRM’s work in NatCat exposure and risk, as particularly related to earthquake damage and losses to building stocks. The role will focus on modelling of ground motions during earthquakes and structural responses under earthquake-induced ground motions.

Key Responsibilities:

ICRM is looking for a modeller for earthquake hazards and building structural loss. The ideal candidate should be a self-motivated, pro-active, results-oriented professional with an ability to work with minimal supervision in dealing with data uncertainties. He/she will be responsible for

  • Modelling propagation of earthquake motion from source to site

  • Perform probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA)

  • Perform structural calculations to quantify damage and loss under earthquake-induced ground motions

  • Assess occurrence frequencies of such loss events including probabilistic seismic risk assessments

Job Requirements:

  • A PhD degree in Civil Engineering or Earthquake Engineering in a closely relevant field.

  • Familiarity with earthquake data, models and software used in earthquake hazard and loss modelling.

  • Demonstrated competence of programming languages, such as Matlab, R, or Python, within a GIS environment

  • Ability to publish and communicate effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences

  • Ability to advance other research areas in emerging risks such as related to urban lifelines and cascading failures

We regret to inform that only shortlisted candidates will be notified.
