Job description

CAMECA, a world leader in microanalytical and metrology instrumentation, is seeking an R&D Scientist to support the design and development of next-generation Atom Probe microscopes. Reporting to the Principal Engineer, this role collaborates closely with cross-functional teams on advanced instrumentation and subsystem development.

Key Responsibilities:

Instrument Performance & Testing

  • Design, coordinate, and conduct subsystem and full instrument performance tests
  • Quantify performance of atom probe instrumentation and report findings through internal reports and technical reviews

Simulation & Modeling

  • Develop ion optical simulation tools to predict overall instrument performance
  • Validate electrostatic models using existing atom probe systems and recommend enhancements for future designs

Product Development & Design Collaboration

  • Collaborate with sales, marketing, applications, and engineering teams to define next-generation instruments
  • Participate in cross-functional design reviews involving mechanical, optical, and electronic systems
  • Work closely with electrical, software, and mechanical engineers to design, procure, and test prototype systems

Manufacturing & Process Development

  • Develop processes for manufacturing proprietary components used in atom probe instruments
  • Apply knowledge of advanced manufacturing methods, including heat treatment, forming, EDM, electroforming, micro-drilling, laser processing, machining, and tolerance analysis

Systems Evaluation & Technical Development

  • Evaluate and enhance microchannel plate-based single particle detection systems
  • Assess materials and define best practices for ultra-high vacuum (UHV) and high-voltage (HV) mechanical designs

Support & Troubleshooting

  • Provide hands-on troubleshooting support to Service and Manufacturing teams, both on-site and remotely as needed
  • Support production and service personnel through training, documentation, and issue resolution

Requirements:

Education & Experience

  • MS or PhD in Materials Science, Engineering, Physics, or a related field (required)
  • 6–8 years of relevant industry experience
  • Experience with simulation tools such as Lorentz or COMSOL (preferred)

Technical Knowledge

  • Strong foundation in engineering, physics, and materials science principles
  • Experience with ion optics, electron optics, TOF mass spectrometry, and single particle detection systems
  • Experience in the design and troubleshooting of ultra-high vacuum systems
  • Proven experience in complex electro-mechanical product development
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD (SolidWorks preferred)
  • Familiarity with fabrication methods and design for manufacturability
  • Experience with diagnostic and measurement equipment and data acquisition/analysis
  • Experience working with high-voltage systems (+/-20kV) and in-vacuum component design
  • Experience with advanced sample preparation techniques (e.g., focused ion beam, electron microscopy, PVD)
  • Experience with machine shop tools (CNC mill, lathe, hand tools)
  • Proficiency with lab automation tools (Python, AI code generation, National Instruments LabVIEW)
  • Experience with data analysis and modeling tools (Mathematica or MATLAB preferred)
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to use AI tools to improve productivity, decision-making, work quality, and to reduce costs. The successful candidate must be able to identify appropriate AI use cases and critically evaluate AI-generated outputs.

Professional & Interpersonal Skills

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present complex concepts in multidisciplinary environments
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving capabilities
  • Hands-on approach, with willingness to work in both laboratory and production environments
  • Flexibility to take on diverse challenges and learn new skills as needed
  • Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships
  • Demonstrated drive for results and commitment to quality and team success

Working Environment:

  • Hands-on role working across laboratory, engineering, and production settings
  • Close collaboration with cross-functional technical teams
  • Involves both experimental work on prototypes and support of manufacturing operations
