Job description

Introduction

The Principal Compliance Engineer will ensure iRobot products comply with product standards and regulatory requirements (Safety, EMC, Radio, Energy, and Environmental) in worldwide markets. Compliance Engineers at iRobot work cross-functionally with design engineering, operations, program management, marketing, external certification services, and others to ensure applicable standards and regulations are satisfied including delivery of the necessary certifications, registrations, and other compliance requirements. Compliance engineering also coordinate iRobot's international compliance efforts for efficient and timely execution. The successful candidate must have demonstrated capability to work on multiple programs on cross functional program teams and be the expert relative to product standards and regulatory requirements.

Essential Functions/Duties

  • Evaluate product construction, safety, EMC and radio designs to ensure that products comply with applicable local, regional, and global requirements. 
  • Evaluate product compliance with environmental (materials, energy, end of life, and recycling) regulations worldwide.
  • Effectively coordinate product testing with regulatory agencies (e.g. TUV, UL, Intertek, CSA, etc.) including working with engineering and operations teams to ensure required samples, technical documentation, and instructions are provided for successful testing and certification.
  • Evaluate product marking, packaging, and user documentation (in box and web) to ensure compliance with applicable local and global requirements.
  • Work with iRobot Program Management Team to establish and manage due dates for each program deliverable.
  • Be the expert and effectively communicate regulatory and standards requirements. 
  • Work with regulatory agencies and other external sources to understand upcoming changes in regulations and to determine, in advance, the impact on new and legacy iRobot products.
  • Review and manage certification documentation updates internally and with certification agencies based on product component changes, regulatory updates, standards changes & updates, country requirements (e.g. annual renewals), document expiration, and similar.  Ensure documents are complete, accurate, and timely.
  • Coordinate compliance efforts with iRobot Suppliers as appropriate

Minimum Qualifications

8+ years in regulatory compliance field. Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Safety Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or other applicable engineering discipline Highly organized with the ability to juggle multiple competing projects and prioritize tasks. Knowledge and demonstrated experience working with certification bodies (e.g. TUV, Intertek, UL CSA etc.). Experience certifying electronic or electromechanical products for international markets Demonstrated experience and knowledge in at least 2 of the following disciplines:

Functional and electrical safety standards to electronic products

EMC and telecommunication/radio product requirements and testing

EPS & Battery charger regulations as they apply to electronic products

Product environmental regulations and standards effecting electronic equipment (materials restrictions, materials disclosures, end of life, recycling, eco-design)

Excellent oral and written communication Experience and knowledge of IEC 60335 standard requirements Proficient in MS office

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience working in a certification testing laboratory
  • Experience in international approval of consumer or home appliance products
  • Experience with working with overseas Far East manufacturing operations
  • Knowledge of safety testing of lithium batteries
