Population Health Scholar

The Population Health Scholar (PHS) program is a pathways initiative housed in the Center for Learning & Innovation (CLI), a branch of the Population Health Division (PHD) in the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH), that is dedicated to public health training and workforce development.
The SFDPH prioritizes equitable and inclusive access to quality healthcare for its community and values the importance of diversity in its workforce. All employees at the Department of Public Health work to advance equity, inclusion, and diversity with a specific lens and focus on race, ethnicity, gender, sex, sexuality, disability, and immigration status.

The PHS program provides paid work experience, with the option of extension based on funding availability, and on-the-job training experience to early career professionals to launch their career in public health. With the support of an assigned mentor and staff from the CLI and Community Health Group, scholars will develop and complete a public health project in addition to receiving foundational public health and professional development training.

The PHS program aims to equip the next generation of public health workers with programmatic, research, data analytic, and project management skills. PHS is a multi-component program that features: 1) one-on-one mentorship from PHD leaders where scholars complete mentored projects, 2) regular public health and professional development seminars and 3) self-directed learning that is tailored to individual needs and goals. Upon program completion, PHSs will be able to effectively navigate civil service employment opportunities and scholars will have gained the necessary experience to meet the minimum qualifications of the health worker and health program coordinator series.

HIV Capacity Building Scholar
The Population Health Scholar will be placed within the CLI-based CDC-funded Capacity Building Assistance (CBA) program for High Impact HIV Prevention (PS24-0020), getSFcba. The Scholar will assist CBA leadership and team members develop impactful communications about getSFcba offerings focused on the HIV prevention workforce at health departments and community-based organizations across the U.S. Under the direct mentorship of the CBA manager, this scholar will update the program website, develop monthly newsletters, and support the development of CBA resources, including toolkits and detailing aids.

This is a temporary, on-site, grant-funded, full-time, benefitted position. Employment is provided by Heluna Health.

Pay Rate: $29.00 per hour

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
General
• Develop scope of work with mentor and establish project timelines and deliverables, which may include a combination of the following tasks:
o Communicate and present results and/or recommendations
o Support in the development of new resources
o Engage in one-on-one mentorship related to the selected project
• Attend regular mentoring, supervision, and staff meetings
• Participate in networking events and team building with other scholars and staff
• Attend public health and professional development seminars, complete self-directed public health learning courses, and other training activities.
• Shadow clinical and community-based outreach within the Population Health Division
• Contribute actively to a cohesive team environment
• Assist with developing culturally appropriate health educational materials and trainings to target populations facing health disparities, especially Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. substance use, environmental health, and sexual health.
• Support administration, evaluation, and operations of public health programs and services.
• Develop skills in data entry and analysis to support drafting reports and assessments

Support for the HIV getSFcba Program and CLI Communications
• Support the CBA Manager and Team in the planning, creation, and scheduling of content for the getSFcba social media channels, primarily X and LinkedIn
• Monitor social media engagement, identify opportunities for outreach, and assist with drafting timely responses or updates
• Help maintain and update the CBA program website by preparing content, posting announcements, and ensuring information is current and accurate.
• Assist in developing marketing materials, including digital flyers, fact sheets, presentations, and outreach assets
• Contribute to the creation, formatting, and distribution of newsletters, including gathering content, drafting summaries, and preparing layouts.
• Collaborate with team members to ensure consistent branding, tone, and accessibility across all communications materials
• Assist with tracking analytics for social media, website traffic, and newsletter performance to inform communication strategies
• Provide general administrative and project support to CLI for communications initiatives, including the Training Resource and Information Portal (TRIP) website
• Ability to take on additional projects and responsibility to support the CBA team in fulfilling its deliverables

JOB QUALIFICATIONS
• Willingness to work on a project within a PHD department Branch in SFDPH. Scholar must be willing to assist in the design of the project and implementation of relevant projects
• Ability to work on multiple tasks and prioritize projects based on deadlines
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and to collaborate effectively on teams
• Knowledge of and sensitivity to diverse communities, particularly communities of color and gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender communities and those most affected by health inequities
• Previous experience working, volunteering, or life experience working with communities that are highly affected by chronic illness, HIV and/ or other communicable diseases

Education/Experience
Minimum Education/Experience:
• Possession of high school diploma or GED

And one of the following:
• Completion of 30 college credits OR
• Equivalent of one year of college OR
• One year of a workforce training certificate program OR
• Possession of a Community Health Worker Certificate from City College of San Francisco OR
• 6 months of employment
• Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirement by the final filing date unless otherwise noted.
• One-year full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week)

Desirable Education:
• Completed a baccalaureate degree or masters degree in public health or related field from an accredited college or university in the United States
• Or a current matriculated student in their final year of an undergraduate or masters of public health/ or related field program and can complete the required 40 hours per week for the position

• Willingness to work on a project related to health communications and marketing in the Center for Learning & Innovation that can reach public health workers on a national scale
