We accomplish this mission by working with local, regional, state and federal partners to plan, design, construct, operate and maintain projects that will reduce the probability and risk of flooding for the residents and businesses within our jurisdiction.<br><br>The Orleans Levee District jurisdictional area falls under the umbrella of the Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority-East (SLFPA-E) and includes East Jefferson, Orleans and St. Bernard parishes on the East Bank. It is the duty of the Orleans Levee District Police Department to patrol and inspect the levees and floodwalls that surround Orleans Parish and to check various gauges and flood structures to ensure the integrity of the levee system.<br><u><strong><br></strong></u><strong><u>OVERVIEW OF THE ROLE</u></strong><br>The Department also serves to protect lives and property, while also enforcing federal, state, and local laws through active mobile and/or foot patrols. The incumbent in this position performs responsible, commissioned and law enforcement duties in the prevention of crime and to protect life and property, while armed and uniformed. &nbsp;Supervision is from a police official of a higher level, i.e. Police Sergeant, Police Lieutenant, and/or Police Captain.<br><br><strong style="color: inherit; margin-right: 0; margin-bottom: 8pt">Protects life and property, with an emphasis on law enforcement, crime prevention, crime and accident investigation and arranging emergency services. &nbsp;Incumbents patrol an assigned area on foot or in a vehicle to detect and prevent crime.&nbsp;</p></li><li><p style="margin-top: 0; margin-right: 0; margin-bottom: 8pt">Inspects and reports on the condition of 107 miles of earthen levees and floodwalls, 1400 acres of levee turn maintenance area, 200 land-based floodgates and 6 navigational floodgates, 3 permanent canal closures and pumps, and various valves along the levee system.&nbsp;</p></li><li><p style="margin-top: 0; margin-right: 0; margin-bottom: 8pt">Participates in large-scale crowd control on the Lakefront during peak season. &nbsp;Assists the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) with crowd control during Mardi Gras. &nbsp;Also provides backup to NOPD in other law enforcement activities as requested.&nbsp;</p></li><li><p style="margin-top: 0; margin-right: 0; margin-bottom: 8pt">Attends classes and training sessions to maintain law enforcement skills, learn new techniques, remain up to date on laws affecting work, and other matters deemed appropriate or beneficial&nbsp;</p></li><li><p style="margin-top: 0; margin-right: 0; margin-bottom: 8pt">Escorts SLFPA-E staff, trucks and equipment to other parishes requiring assistance with flood protection or levee repair/reinforcement. &nbsp; Provides security for SLFPA-E’s emergency repair/maintenance and repair crews during hurricane or other events that could lead to flooding. &nbsp;Ensures that only authorized individuals are allowed access to such areas&nbsp;</p></li></ul><p style="margin: 0 0 8pt"><u>Position-Specific Details:</u></p><p style="margin: 0 0 8pt"><strong style="color: inherit;
