Department: Chestnut Surgical Center

Chestnut Surgical Center at Baystate Medical Center is seeking a dependable, patient-focused Per Diem OR Assistant to support our surgical services team. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys working in a fast-paced healthcare environment and wants to play an essential role in providing safe, efficient, and compassionate surgical care.

As an OR Assistant, you'll work alongside nurses, surgeons, anesthesia providers, and other perioperative team members to ensure operating rooms are prepared, patients are safely transported and positioned, equipment is maintained, and surgical cases run efficiently throughout the day.

What You'll Do

  • Assist with operating room turnover and room setup to support on-time surgical schedules.
  • Prepare surgical suites according to procedure-specific needs.
  • Clean, inspect, and maintain equipment while identifying and reporting equipment concerns.
  • Help maintain a clean, safe, and sterile environment by following infection prevention and body substance precaution protocols.
  • Stock surgical supplies, maintain inventory and PAR levels, and replenish blanket warmers throughout the day.
  • Transport patients safely throughout the perioperative area, including assisting with transfers to the PACU and other nursing units.
  • Assist the surgical team with patient positioning before and during procedures.
  • Support Heart & Vascular staff with pre-operative patient clipping and preparation.
  • Pick up blood products from Transfusion Medicine Services as directed by the Registered Nurse or Coordinator.
  • Answer department phones and provide general support to the perioperative team.
  • Complete required annual education and participate in ongoing learning opportunities.

Qualifications

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • No prior experience required—we welcome motivated candidates who are eager to learn.

Preferred

  • Three to six months of healthcare, surgical services, patient transport, or related experience.

Compensation

Note: The compensation range(s) in the table below represent the base salaries for all positions at a given grade across the health system. Typically, a new hire can expect a starting salary somewhere in the lower part of the range. Actual salaries may vary by position and will be determined based on the candidate's relevant experience. No employee will be paid below the minimum of the range. Pay ranges are listed as hourly for non-exempt employees and based on assumed full time commitment for exempt employees.

$17.01 - $19.55 - $22.81
