Job Description

Rolls-Royce Germany is offering an exciting opportunity for the position Materials Engineer (m/f/d) in Dahlewitz near Berlin. We are seeking a personality for our interdisciplinary team who combines scientific depth with strategic vision. As a Materials Scientist with project management responsibilities, you will play a key role in the development of innovative materials and oversee projects from the initial idea through to successful implementation.

Key Responsibilities

  • To resolve material related problems through evaluative judgements. Analyses factual information from multiple sources, interprets results and identifies effective solutions by applying their own technical knowledge, expertise and engineering judgement.
  • Provide expert technical guidance on selection and application of high-temperature alloys (e.g. Ni-based superalloys and advanced high-temperature materials) for aero engine components.
  • Support design teams in defining material specifications, allowable properties, and application limits based on operating environment (temperature, stress, oxidation, creep, fatigue, and thermal cycling conditions).
  • support root-cause investigations of material-related service issues, in-service failures, and manufacturing non-conformances involving high-temperature alloys.
  • Interface with casting, forging, powder metallurgy, additive manufacturing, and coating suppliers to ensure process capability aligns with material application requirements.
  • Develop and maintain material specifications, design allowables, and application guidelines in line with airworthiness and certification standards (e.g., EASA CS-E, FAA Part 33).
  • Support qualification and certification programs, including material testing plans, data review, and substantiation reports.
  • Collaborate with R&D teams on evaluation of new/emerging high-temperature materials and coating systems for future engine programs.
  • Provide input to Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and lifing methodologies related to material degradation mechanisms (creep, oxidation, hot corrosion, thermal-mechanical fatigue).

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Materials Science, Metallurgical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience with aerospace materials.
  • Knowledge of mechanical characterisation, manufacturing processes and degradation mechanisms
  • Familiarity with non-destructive evaluation (NDE) methods and metallographic analysis.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings and aerospace specifications.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
