Job description

The Marine Freight Coordinator is responsible for coordinating export shipments from Nigeria Free Trade Zone operations and ensuring the smooth execution of international ocean freight shipments. This role serves as a key operational and local commercial coordination point, working directly with shipping lines, agents, carriers, internal teams, and local service providers to meet export deadlines, secure reliable capacity, prepare accurate documents, resolve shipment issues, and maintain cost-effective service in a fast-paced logistics environment.

Responsibilities:

The Marine Freight Coordinator will be a part of the global freight team. It will be based in Lagos, supporting Nigeria export operations and reporting directly to the Director of Global Marine Freight. Below are some duties:

  •  Coordinate export shipments with shipping lines, supplier agents, local logistics providers, and internal teams from booking through vessel departure.
  • Serve as the local operational escalation point, resolving issues across scheduling, capacity, equipment availability, documentation, invoicing, cargo movement, Free Trade Zone coordination, and vessel rollovers.
  • Support commercial activities with the shipping lines collecting rates & surcharges, ensuring rate portfolios are always up to date.
  • Monitor carrier performance, service disruptions, local market conditions, and country-specific risks
  • Visit shipping lines and local service providers as needed to strengthen working relationships, support commercial activities, and address service issues.
  • Analyze trends and highlight risks, savings, and opportunities for process improvement.
  • Manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment, drive continuous process improvements, and perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in the international Container Maritime industry: Carrier agent, ffwd, similar role on the shipper side.
  • Strong knowledge of export maritime shipment execution from A to Z
  • Fluency in English, written and verbal
  • Established local network with shipping lines and logistics providers in Nigeria is strongly preferred.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables, formulas, reporting, data review, and MS Office tools;
  • Strong analytical ability to maintain accurate shipment, rate, cost, and performance reports.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot and resolve operational issues proactively
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities, urgent requests, and deadlines.
  • Understanding of carrier contracts, rate structures, surcharges, and export compliance requirements.
  • Process-oriented mindset with a focus on efficiency, accuracy, visibility, service reliability, and continuous improvement.
  • Ability and willingness to visit carriers, agents, and local service providers in Nigeria to support operational coordination and commercial activity as required.
