Manager, Research Operations

• Full time fixed term role for 3 years

• Play a key role in the smooth operation of leading Gender Equality and Inclusion @ Work research at the University of Sydney

• Base Salary of $140,913 - $148,684 + 17% superannuation 

About the opportunity

We are seeking a Manager, Research Operations to drive high-impact research that advances workplace gender equality. The Australian Centre for Gender Equality and Inclusion @ Work is the leading academic research hub in the Asia-Pacific, partnering with industry, government, and communities to generate evidence-based insights that drive structural change in the labour market and economy.

You will oversee the Centre’s research program, managing multiple projects to ensure timely, high-quality, and on-budget delivery while identifying and pursuing new opportunities. The research program focuses on designing gender equality into the future of work, addressing gender-based segregation and disparities, aligning work and care, and fostering inclusive workplace cultures. This role is ideal for a dynamic leader and team player who is solutions- and outcomes-focused, thrives in a fast-paced environment, and is passionate about using research to drive structural change.

Your key responsibilities include:

• overseeing the Centre’s program of research including the delivery of multiple projects, ensuring effective planning, risk management, and timely, high-quality delivery of outputs within budget.

• collaborating with the Director to foster a high-performing, supportive, and cohesive team culture, providing mentorship to Centre employees and collaborating with the Centre’s academic members

• managing daily operations, designing and streamlining processes and systems, and overseeing reporting to enhance efficiency and impact to support the Centre’s strategy

• driving strategic growth, advising leadership, and ensuring strong governance, compliance, and financial sustainability

• providing financial oversight, optimising budgets to maximise resources and infrastructure for long-term sustainability

• building and maintaining strong relationships with internal and external partners, shaping communication strategies to amplify the Centre’s mission and impact and to secure ongoing support

About you

• relevant tertiary qualifications

• proven program management experience with a strong ability to manage multiple competing priorities effectively and deliver impact

• demonstrated ability to build and sustain a high-performing, collaborative, and cohesive team

• strong financial management skills, including experience managing grants and multiple funding streams to optimise resource allocation

• successful business development experience in universities, the public sector, or the private sector

• proven ability to deliver high-quality outcomes at pace in large, complex environments

• strong written and verbal communication skills

• well-developed interpersonal skills, with the ability to mentor and support team members to drive meaningful outcomes

• experience in the higher education, government, or consulting sector is highly regarded.
