Legal Counsel – Fuels Europe (Risk & Compliance Focus)

Location: Europe (flexible)
Reports to: General Counsel – Fuels
Functional reporting: Regional VP, Europe


About the Role

Bureau Veritas Fuels is seeking a commercially driven Legal Counsel to provide strategic legal advisory, risk management, and compliance oversight across our European operations. You will be a trusted legal partner to the Fuels Division, delivering pragmatic solutions in a fast-paced, international environment while supporting day-to-day operations and strategic initiatives.

This role combines legal expertise with business acumen, requiring strong judgment, responsiveness, and the ability to navigate complex, multi-jurisdictional challenges.


Key Responsibilities

Legal Advisory & Business Support

  • Provide clear, practical legal advice to the Fuels Division across Europe
  • Support day-to-day operations, commercial activities, and strategic initiatives
  • Function as a key legal partner to management and operational teams

Contracts & Transactions

  • Draft, review, and negotiate a broad range of commercial agreements
  • Support bids, tenders, and contractual risk assessments
  • Ensure appropriate use and application of Group Terms & Conditions

Risk Management & Governance

  • Identify, assess, and manage legal risks across the business
  • Ensure compliance with international sanctions, trade controls, and related regulatory requirements
  • Support corporate governance, company law compliance, and internal policies
  • Ensure appropriate legal structures, authorities, and approvals are in place

Compliance & Ethics

  • Oversee and support compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and Group policies
  • Promote and monitor adherence to the Bureau Veritas Code of Ethics
  • Support investigations and reporting of compliance matters
  • Deliver training and guidance across the region

Claims & Disputes

  • Manage and advise on claims, disputes, and incident-related matters
  • Coordinate with external counsel where required

Cross-functional & Regional Support

  • Collaborate closely with Finance, HR, Credit, Compliance, and Operations
  • Liaise with other Group legal teams and regional stakeholders
  • Support broader Group initiatives including restructuring, M&A, and legal projects

Candidate Profile

Required Qualifications

  • Qualified lawyer, admitted to practice in a relevant authority
  • 5–7+ years' experience in a law firm or international company
  • Strong experience in commercial contracts and legal risk management
  • Ability to provide pragmatic, business-oriented legal advice
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Fluent in English

Preferred Qualifications

  • Exposure to compliance frameworks (sanctions, anti-corruption, regulatory frameworks)
  • Experience in international or multi-jurisdictional legal environments
  • Additional European languages
