About This Opportunity 

This is an exciting opportunity for a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer to join a visionary and collaborative academic community at the forefront of artificial intelligence research and education. Working closely with Professor Tim Miller, you will contribute to a strategic partnership between The University of Queensland and the Thapar Institute of Engineering & Technology (TIET) in Patiala, India to establish a joint Centre of Excellence in Data Science and AI.
 

In this role, you will undertake impactful cross disciplinary research, engage with industry partners, and help shape the next generation of AI professionals in a dynamic, purpose-driven environment aligned to UQ’s commitment to creating change together.

Key responsibilities include:

Appointment at Level B:

  • Develop and deliver high-quality research by establishing an independent and collaborative research program, producing impactful research outputs, and contributing to competitive research funding activities.

  • Provide high-quality teaching through course development and coordination, curriculum enhancement, assessment, and support of undergraduate and postgraduate student learning.

  • Supervise and develop students and researchers by contributing to Honours and Higher Degree by Research supervision, mentoring, and fostering a collaborative research environment.

  • Contribute to academic citizenship and engagement by building partnerships across UQ, Thapar Institute, industry, government and the wider community, participating in service activities, and demonstrating UQ values.


Appointment at Level C:

In addition to the responsibilities above, you will:

  • Provide research leadership by leading strategic research programs, securing significant competitive funding, producing internationally recognised research outputs, and translating research outcomes into broader impact.

  • Lead teaching excellence and innovation through significant contributions to program development, curriculum leadership, and continuous improvement of the student learning experience.

  • Build research and academic capability by leading HDR supervision, mentoring researchers and colleagues, and supporting effective staff development and performance.

  • Strengthen strategic partnerships and institutional impact by leading collaborations across UQ, Thapar Institute, industry, government and professional bodies, contributing to University governance and advancing external engagement.

The person appointed will be expected to undertake occasional travel to Thapar, where the institute will host them on their Patiala campus.

About You 

For Appointment at Level B

Applicants should possess a PhD in data science, artificial intelligence, or equivalent experience. 

Additionally, you will demonstrate:

  • A growing profile in research in data science or artificial intelligence, as demonstrated by track record of publications in high quality journals and conferences, and other impactful outcomes.

  • Demonstrated experience in working on applied, cross-disciplinary projects applying data science or artificial intelligence to real-world problems.

  • Desirable: Evidence of a high level of quality teaching at undergraduate or postgraduate level.

For Appointment at Level C

Selection criteria as listed above, in addition to the following:

  • A growing international profile in data science or artificial intelligence, as demonstrated by track record of publications in high quality journals and conferences, and other impactful outcomes

  • Evidence of successfully seeking, obtaining and managing external research funding.

  • Evidence of a high level of quality teaching at undergraduate or postgraduate level.

  • A solid record of supervision of Honours and Research Higher Degree students to successful completion.
