Job Description

As the Lead Software Engineer for Substation Automation, you will be developing embedded and PC-based software primarily for use within the GE Vernova SCADA substation automation business. The role will involve both the support and enhancement of existing systems, together with the design and development of new systems and architectures going forward.

In this role you will focus on:

  • Development of new products and adding new features and enhancements to existing products.
  • Ensuring the developed solutions comply with customer requirements, industry standards, regulations, and cost targets.
  • Undertaking the complete software development lifecycle to create and test new software components to a defined quality standard.
  • Participating in defining the strategy for current products and systems as well as influencing our future technical solutions.
  • Establishing and maintaining high quality technical documentation.
  • Working within a multi-skilled team of engineers, draftsmen, technicians and/or test engineers.
  • Liaising with other GE Vernova teams, customers, suppliers and sub-contractors.
  • Visiting customer sites to assist with fault finding on systems if required.
  • Occasionally travelling domestically & overseas for short periods of time to provide technical support for tendering, commissioning, customer and supplier meetings (a few weeks per year).

We are looking for a committed and professional individual with:

  • Excellent C/C++ coding and real time software development skills.
  • Experience in capturing requirements and writing technical specifications.
  • An understanding of communication protocols (TCP socket and Serial communications).
  • A relevant degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline, or significant relevant experience gained in a professional engineering environment.
  • Practical experience with developing software for Microsoft Windows platforms using the Microsoft Visual Studio development environment.
  • Valid passport and driver’s license to meet travel requirements.
  • Good communication skills and an ability to present on a technical topic.

  • Knowledge of SQL programming and Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Basic knowledge of electrical systems or substation control systems.
  • Experience in mobile apps development.

This role involves work for customers who manage critical infrastructure, based on customer requirements it will be necessary to carry out background checks and suitability assessments (UK BPSS clearance OR UK SC clearance) as part of the hiring process.
