Currently, The City of Fresno Wastewater Management Division is recruiting for a Laboratory Assistant. Under close supervision, incumbents assist in the laboratory by collecting samples, preparing for chemical and microbiological test procedures, maintaining and cleaning laboratory equipment, and may perform basic laboratory tests.
One vacancy currently exists in the Department of Public Utilities, Wastewater Management Division. Immediate and future vacancies will be filled from this eligible list for a period of three (3) months from the date the eligible list is created, with the option of extending that period for up to a maximum of two years at the City's discretion. If the examination process is suspended for this recruitment, the eligible list may be limited to three (3) months.
Requirements
These are entrance requirements to the competitive examination and do not assure a place on the eligible list. Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications on or before the posted filing deadline in order to qualify.
TO QUALIFY, an applicant must have: Completion of nine semester units from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, or a related field.
The following may be substituted for the required education:
One year of training and experience in an analytical laboratory.
OR
Possession of a valid Water Quality Analyst Certificate as issued by the American Water Works Association.
OR
Grade I Laboratory Technologist Certificate as issued by the California Water Environment Association.
CERTIFICATES MUST BE UPLOADED TO THE APPLICATION FOR VERIFICATION OF REQUIREMENT.
Possession of a valid California Driver's License may be required at time of appointment.
Additional Requirements:
Eligibles certified for consideration for this position will be required to successfully pass a Department interview and a Department of Justice fingerprint process prior to employment with the City of Fresno.
SELECTION PROCESS:
The examination process may consist of the following:
WRITTEN EXAMINATION - 100%: A job related written examination may be administered, which may test a candidate's knowledge, skills and abilities performing laboratory sampling and testing, quality control and assurance procedures, analysis, maintenance and operation of laboratory equipment, and other duties in relation to the position.
Candidates must achieve a passing score to qualify for the eligible list.
The written exam is tentatively scheduled for the week of: August 10, 2026
