The Role

The Underwriter is part of a highly motivated in-house team that supports the profitable growth of the business. You will be responsible for underwriting new business and renewing a portfolio of existing Professional Indemnity and Commercial Risks for the Hiscox Ireland Desk Underwriting portfolio.

Primary communication with brokers is via phone and email, providing support with regard to all risk-related queries to ensure that agreed service standards and key performance objectives are met. A strong focus on building rapport and relationships while delivering an excellent service to our broker partners is essential.

Key Responsibilities

• Underwrite, price and negotiate new business accounts in line with underwriting appetite.
• Create, develop and maintain broker relationships.
• Maximise the retention of existing renewals and handle mid-term adjustments on existing business.
• Contribute to growing the existing business income through cross-sell and up-sell opportunities.
• Deal quickly and efficiently with requests from brokers.
• Effectively negotiate with both internal and external parties, including identified points of contact within brokerages.
• Maintain profitability of the account by making decisive and consistent individual underwriting decisions.
• Identify and challenge non-standard underwriting decisions within the Technical Underwriting Guide (TUG), making reasoned referrals to a product expert or senior underwriter where appropriate.

Person Specification

• Outgoing, driven, detail-oriented and results-focused mindset.
• Minimum 1-2 years of experience in a similar role.
• Ability to identify business needs and provide innovative solutions.
• Strong understanding of basic sales principles, effective negotiation skills and a competitive drive.
• Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
