Job description
The Internal Auditor is responsible for objectively evaluating the adequacy and effectiveness of the Company’s internal controls, risk management systems and operational processes; ensuring compliance with applicable laws, regulations and company policies; and providing management with clear, timely reports that identify root causes and include practical, risk based recommendations to strengthen controls, improve operational efficiency and address other areas for improvement.

Core Elements of the job:

  • Prepare IA engagement planning documents and develop engagement scoping memoranda for review and approval in accordance with the approved IA Methodology and IIA Standards.

  • Set up and maintain audit files in the internal audit system and relevant audit software.

  • Identify key controls and control gaps related to specific risks and control objectives; document risk and control matrices and perform control risk assessments.

  • Design engagement testing strategies, define audit procedures, perform population analysis and sample selection.

  • Perform end-to-end audit engagements (cradle-to-grave) including: documenting/reviewing system descriptions; conducting and documenting walkthroughs; testing control design adequacy and operating effectiveness; executing approved procedures; and concluding on results.

  • Obtain and record sufficient, reliable and relevant evidence to support audit conclusions in line with IIA Standards.

  • Prepare quality working papers that state test objectives, techniques, results and conclusions; verify factual correctness of findings.

  • Draft audit findings that identify root causes, impact and practical, risk‑based recommendations in line with the IA methodology.

  • Compile and submit draft internal audit reports to supervisors; prepare and present final reports to stakeholders as required.

  • Facilitate and participate in opening, scoping and close‑out meetings with senior management and business unit leaders.

  • Collaborate with senior management and unit managers to negotiate acceptance of findings and agree corrective actions and remediation plans.

  • Monitor the implementation of agreed audit recommendations and execute follow‑up and remedial actions until closure.

  • Remain alert to potential fraud and irregularities, identify and investigate suspected fraudulent activities or financial irregularities, and ensure fraud risks are covered during engagements.

  • Analyse data, apply problem‑solving techniques to identify trends, anomalies and irregularities, and use data analytics to support audit objectives.

  • Conduct field audits at various sites across the country and manage relationships with terminal, area and business unit management regarding findings, follow‑ups and corrective actions.

  • Keep audit engagements on schedule; ensure work is completed within agreed timelines and engagement status updates accurately reflect progress.

  • Perform audit and administrative tasks, and other ad‑hoc duties, as directed by supervisors.

  • Maintain professional knowledge by keeping abreast of industry legislative changes, emerging trends and developments in internal auditing techniques and technologies.

Professional Qualification and Certifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or 3-year diploma in internal auditing, risk management, finance, accounting or a related field.

  • Professional certification, CIA (Certified Internal Auditor) with IIA required.

Work Experience:

  • 5 years’ experience:

  • Relevant experience preferably in a similar role in a large, complex commercially focused business

Knowledge and skills:

  • Proficiency with audit management software, data analysis (CAATs) and productivity tools (MS Office, incl. advanced Excel).

  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving and critical‑thinking abilities; able to synthesize complex fact patterns.

  • Excellent written, verbal and presentation skills; able to convey complex information clearly to different audiences.

  • Effective interpersonal skills for collaborating with stakeholders at all levels and working in cross‑functional teams.

  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities and deliver to schedule.

  • High ethical standards and commitment to confidentiality and professional conduct.

  • Adaptability to changing regulatory environments, industry practices and emerging technologies.
