Job Summary

Coordinates activities associated with purchasing regarding replacement surgical instruments and implants used within surgical instrumentation sets. Track purchases of instrument orders and communicates with departments on overdue purchases and repairs. Coordinates the surgical instrument repair process, which includes the repair of video scopes and power equipment. Assists the implant coordinator, nursing supervisors/mangers and other OR staff to ensure that our instuments are serving the needs of the operating room. Run missing instrument reports for OR supervisors and for individual service line leaders. Ensures routine instruments are order weekly on the palm hand-held computer. Places reorders in the proper location in instrument storage room. Works with materials services to follow through on instrument and equipment purchases. Must be able to perform the duties of a Sterile Processing Technician.

Accountabilities

  • Coordinates repairs (On site & Off Site) this includes sending instruments to our vendors repair facility.  - 15%

  • Orders inventory for commonly used instruments using the Prisma Health inventory system (Palm Ordering System). – 15%

  • Maintains  the instrument inventory and set listing on SPM up to date. Assures that bar code labels are assigned to new instruments and sets. - 15%

  • Maintains basic instrument inventory. Organizes instruments in proper location for ease of identification and reordering. – 15%

  • Assists Operating Room Supervisors and Surgical Team Leaders with maintaining and ordering specialized surgical instrumentation for their service line. – 10%

  • Performs the duties of a Senior Sterile Processing Technician, during times of staff shortages.  – 5%

  • Helps maintain and monitors department par levels established by department guidelines. Works with manager and coordinators to assure adequate supplies are available for daily departmental activities.  – 5%

  • Receives supplies from storeroom and assures items are properly secured in the assigned locations. – 5%

  • Tracks and finds missing instrumentation. If unable to locate, reorders replacements. – 5%

  • Works collaboratively with all levels of the perioperative surgical team. – 5%

  • Assists central processing staff in locating and replacing missing surgical instrumentation so that sets are complete at all times. – 5%

Supervisory/Management Responsibilities

This is a non-management job that will report to a supervisor, manager, director or executive.

Minimum Requirements

  • Job related course work beyond high school - Successful completion of a Central Sterile Processing Education Program with certificate. 

    • 5 years - Experience working as an operating room or central processing technician. Knowledge of surgical instrumentation required.

      Required Certifications, Registrations, Licenses

      • STERILE PROCESSOR - CERTIFIED - NCSP
      • Certification from a Sterile Processing certification agency such as IAHCSMM or CBSPD.

        Knowledge, Skills or Abilities

        • Basic computer skills including word processing, spreadsheets, databases and data entry
        • Knowledge of office equipment (fax/copier)
        • Mathematical skills
        • Experience working with various sterilization devices

        • Ability to identify various types of surgical instrumentation.

        • Knowledge of decontamination, assembly, packaging and sterilization procedures.

        • Knowledge of computers and order entry systems.

        • Certification as a surgical technologist. - Preferred
