About the role

The HVAC Startup Technician is responsible for the inspection, startup, commissioning, functional testing, and documentation of newly installed HVAC equipment on commercial and industrial construction projects. This role ensures equipment is installed in accordance with manufacturer requirements, contract documents, and industry standards prior to owner turnover. The technician works closely with project teams, manufacturers, TAB agencies, controls contractors, and owners to verify system performance, resolve deficiencies, and complete startup documentation.

What You'll Be Responsible For

  • Review approved submittals, shop drawings, startup requirements, sequences of operation, and manufacturer installation instructions.
  • Verify startup prerequisites are complete and coordinate startup schedules.
  • Inspect installations for compliance with manufacturer requirements and identify deficiencies.
  • Perform startup of commercial HVAC equipment including AHUs, RTUs, DOAS, chillers, boilers, pumps, VRF systems, VAV systems, split systems, and related equipment.
  • Perform functional testing and record operating data.
  • Verify safeties, alarms, operating sequences, and BAS communication.
  • Support commissioning activities and coordinate with TAB agencies, controls contractors, and manufacturers.
  • Troubleshoot startup issues and coordinate warranty concerns.
  • Complete startup forms, reports, deficiency logs, refrigerant logs, and warranty documentation.
  • Verify quality standards, support project closeout, comply with OSHA, LOTO, Arc Flash, EPA regulations, and company safety policies.
  • Coordinate with owners, engineers, contractors, and assist with owner training.

What You Need

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • EPA Section 608 Universal Certification
  • OSHA 10 minimum (OSHA 30 preferred)
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Manufacturer certifications preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum 5 years commercial or industrial HVAC experience. Startup or commissioning experience preferred. Strong electrical troubleshooting background. Experience with BAS controls and VFDs preferred.
  • Technical Skills: Ability to read mechanical/electrical drawings and wiring diagrams; knowledge of refrigeration cycles, hydronic systems, airflow and psychrometrics; operation of diagnostic instruments; computer/tablet proficiency.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment

  • Lift up to 75 pounds.
  • Work on rooftops, in mechanical rooms, confined spaces, and outdoors.
  • Frequent climbing, kneeling, bending, and standing.
  • Travel between project sites as required.
  • Wear required PPE.
