Job Title: Program Assistant

Department: HPU Gardens/Facility Operations

Supervisor: Rachel Diaz, Faith Stutts, Emma Martone

Starting Rate of Pay: $10.00

Length of Time: Eligible for rehire on a yearly basis.

Department Description:

The Mariana H. Qubein Arboretum & Gardens is a collection of gardens and green spaces situated within the High Point University campus.  The gardens serve the campus community and are also free and open to the public.

Job Description:

The Program Assistant will work with the Gardens Coordinator to plan and lead garden programming including garden tours, and workshops for students, faculty and staff, and the public.

Job Location/ Hours Required:

The candidate will perform their job duties in a variety of locations, depending on the location of programs. Most will occur in the HPU Gardens that are spread throughout campus and the Caine Conservatory classroom.  Planning and prep work will also be performed in the Gardens office, located in the Admin Support Center.

Hours will vary based on seasonal demand and the program calendar. This position does not have a required weekly minimum. Work will primarily be performed during the work week, and some weekend hours are required.

Responsibilities:

  • Communicate with Gardens Coordinator to keep track of tour and program calendar
  • Lead tours of the campus gardens for external and internal groups of up to 20 people
  • Work with the Gardens Coordinator to prepare for and execute workshops
  • Reach out to internal and external groups to coordinate and plan tours and workshops
  • Optional hands-on gardening work including weeding, mulching, and planting may be available for additional hours
  • Work collaboratively with other students, volunteers, and staff in a professional and respectful manner

Required Qualifications:

  • Able to work outdoors in various weather conditions
  • Able to walk and work on uneven or unpaved terrain
  • Able to lift 25 lbs. consistently and up to 40 lbs. occasionally
  • Reliable and punctual
  • Willing to learn plant identification and memorize tour script
  • Able to speak to large groups of diverse audiences
  • Able to work independently
