Job Summary

The histotechnologist (HTL) plays a critical role in the diagnostic process by preparing tissue samples for microscopic examination by pathologists. This position involves the use of specialized laboratory equipment and techniques to cut, stain, and mount tissue on slides, enabling the visualization of cellular structures necessary for accurate diagnosis and medical research. Key responsibilities include, preparing and processing tissue specimens through embedding, microtomy (sectioning), staining, and slide mounting. Ensuring quality control and consistency throughout all tissue preparation and staining procedures. Operate, maintain, and calibrate laboratory instruments including microtomes, cryostats, tissue processors, and stainers. Maintain accurate and detailed documentation of all processed samples, including specimen identification, preparation steps, and stain types. Collaborate closely with pathologists, surgeons, and laboratory staff to ensure timely and accurate processing of diagnostic tissue samples. A histotechnologist will also be responsible for validating laboratory instruments and reagents, monitoring reagent expiration dates, and preparing antibodies. The histotechnologist will also be responsible for providing training.

Pay Range

Minimum $34.11 Midpoint $45.21 Maximum $56.28

Rate of pay is determined by various factors, including but not limited to knowledge, skills, competencies, experience, education, as well as position requirements.

Experience

* Required: Minimum one (1) year experience.

* Preferred: Minimum Three (3) years of experience.

Education

* Required: Bachelor's Degree

* Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or a related science field

Training

* Required: ASCP certification as a Histotechnologist (HTL) preferred, or eligibility to obtain within one year of hire

* Preferred: Approved HT program

Specialized Skills

* Required: Must have strong mental and visual concentration. Good hand/eye coordination. Strong interpersonal skills with emphasis on communication.

* Preferred: Troubleshooting skills

Licensure

* Required: ASCP certification as a Histotechnologist (HTL) preferred, or eligibility to obtain within one year of hire

Work Environments - Functional Demand:
