Job Summary

The Histotechnician (HT) plays a critical role in the diagnostic process by preparing tissue samples for microscopic examination by pathologists. This position involves the use of specialized laboratory equipment and techniques to cut, stain, and mount tissue on slides, enabling the visualization of cellular structures necessary for accurate diagnosis and medical research. Key responsibilities include: Preparing and processing tissue specimens through embedding, microtomy (sectioning), staining, and slide mounting. Ensuring quality control and consistency throughout all tissue preparation and staining procedures. Operate, maintain, and calibrate laboratory instruments including microtomes, cryostats, tissue processors, and stainers. Maintain accurate and detailed documentation of all processed samples, including specimen identification, preparation steps, and stain types. Collaborate closely with pathologists, surgeons, and laboratory staff to ensure timely and accurate processing of diagnostic tissue samples.

Pay Range

Minimum $25.46 Midpoint $33.73 Maximum $42.01

Rate of pay is determined by various factors, including but not limited to knowledge, skills, competencies, experience, education, as well as position requirements.

Experience

• Required:  Minimum of one (1) year of experience as a histotechnician (HT) or equivalent.

• Preferred:   Three (3) years of experience as a histotechnican or equivalent. 

Education

• Required: Completion of two (2) years college with courses in Biology and Chemistry.

• Preferred: Associates degree in sciences or completion of an accredited histotechnology program.

Training

• Required: None required.

Specialized Skills

• Required: Must have strong mental and visual concentration. Good hand/eye coordination. Strong interpersonal skills with emphasis on communication. Strong troubleshooting skills.

Licensure

• Required:  ASCP certification as a Histotechnician (HT) preferred or eligibility to obtain within 1 year of hire.
