About the role
You will join ZEISS Vision Care’s global Disruptive Innovation team to develop electro-active prescription eyewear and future smart optical devices. This senior role focuses on hands-on electronics development for wearable-grade systems, translating experimental concepts into robust hardware ready for industrialization. You will collaborate closely with firmware developers and system owners in Germany and contribute to ZEISS’ smart eyewear roadmap, including future sensor integration and connected device features.
You will
Design and evolve MCU-based embedded electronics for electrochromic and smart optical/wearable devices from concept through product validation.
Architect and implement low-power analog and digital circuits for battery-powered wearable systems, including schematic design and PCB architecture (Altium or similar) with multilayer/HDI layouts.
Integrate interfaces to sensors, actuators and memory using common buses such as I2C, SPI and UART, supporting features such as touch input and future light-sensor-based auto-tint functionality.
Perform circuit simulation and analysis (e.g., LTspice) and ensure robust hardware–software integration with ARM-based MCU platforms.
Lead hardware bring-up, debugging and system validation using laboratory tools such as oscilloscopes and spectrum analyzers.
Plan and support EMC pre-compliance and EMC testing, incorporating mitigation strategies into hardware design.
Develop internal test platforms and automation tools for device characterization, calibration and production testing (including HIL where applicable).
Translate experimental prototypes into production-ready electronics and support design transfer to manufacturing partners in China (DFM/DFT, tolerance stack-ups, yield).
Interface with global procurement and suppliers to optimize component selection, cost efficiency, availability and long-term supply robustness.
Contribute to new device concepts and technology exploration within the Disruptive Innovation team, collaborating with global teams to advance next-generation smart eyewear platforms.
5+ years of experience in embedded hardware development and circuit design for MCU-based systems using ARM-based microcontrollers (e.g., STM32, Nordic, Microchip or comparable).
Strong expertise in analog and digital electronics design, particularly for low-power and battery-operated devices.
Proven experience with PCB design tools (Altium preferred) including multilayer and HDI designs.
Solid understanding of PCB manufacturing processes, design-for-manufacturing and cost drivers (tolerances, reliability, obsolescence management).
Hands-on experience with hardware prototyping, debugging and system-level validation.
Experience with EMC testing and translating test results into design improvements.
Basic understanding of embedded software in C and hardware–software co-design.
Exposure to wearable electronics, electro-optical devices, smart eyewear, sensors or AR/VR hardware is a strong advantage.
Experience collaborating with external suppliers and manufacturing partners in global development environments.
A builder mindset with curiosity and ownership, comfortable exploring new concepts and contributing to disruptive innovation initiatives (e.g., sensor integration, connected device features and future smart eyewear capabilities).
