BASIC RESPONSIBILITIES
The internship program will provide the student with hands-on experience and relevant skills across diverse departments, to include but not limited to, accounting, treasury, finance, information technology and business lending. In this position, the intern will learn how to apply skills acquired through formal education in a professional setting. The intern will gain a better understanding of the business roles within a credit union, contribute to meaningful projects, and receive mentorship and guidance from experienced professionals.
TYPICAL DUTIES
Partners with department staff and leadership on operational tasks and strategic projects; contributes meaningful input in team meetings, planning sessions, and initiative reviews.
Prepares, organizes, and analyzes data for departmental reports using Microsoft Excel, Word, and other platforms.
Gains familiarity with all areas of credit union operations within the assigned area
Provides high-quality internal customer service by responding to requests and inquiries in a professional and timely manner.
Assists in identifying opportunities for process improvement and contributes ideas for workflow optimization.
Assists in preparing presentations and documentation for leadership review.
Conducts research and presents findings on emerging industry trends, regulatory updates, or financial benchmarks relevant to the assigned area.
Maintain and understand compliance to ensure that work complies with GECU’s established policies, procedures and applicable regulations, to include Bank Secrecy Act (BSA), Anti-Money Laundering Act (AML) addressing Money Laundering and the Countering the Financing of Terrorism (CFT), Member Identification Program (MIP), and Office of Foreign Asset Control (OFAC).
Other duties as may be assigned or required in connection with the general operation of the credit union.
Key Elements of the Role:
Program Support and Implementation
Assisting with the planning, coordination, and execution of community development programs such as financial education workshops, volunteer initiatives, outreach events, and community resource activities. This includes preparing materials, supporting logistics, and helping ensure smooth program delivery.
Community Outreach and Engagement
Supporting efforts to build and strengthen relationships with community partners, schools, nonprofits, and local agencies. Interns may help conduct outreach, distribute information, staff events, and engage directly with community members to raise awareness of available services.
Data Collection and Reporting
Gathering, organizing, and maintaining program data to support impact measurement, grant requirements, and departmental reporting. Responsibilities often include attendance tracking, survey collection, data entry, and assisting with summaries for internal or external stakeholders.
Research and Resource Development
Conducting research on community needs, best practices, and local resources to support program enhancement and strategic initiatives. Interns may explore grant opportunities, demographic data, and trends to help the department identify new opportunities for community impact.
Administrative and Operational Support
Providing day-to-day administrative assistance such as scheduling, preparing documents, updating databases, organizing supplies, and supporting communication efforts. Interns help maintain efficient operations and gain exposure to core functions of community development work.
