Description:

The Krembil Brain Institute - University Health Network (UHN) invites applications for the Cheng Family Chair in Epilepsy Research. The Chair appointment is for a five-year term and may be renewed once for an additional five-year term, subject to a successful performance review and the availability of continued funding. The successful applicant must be a Neurologist and eligible to hold an academic appointment at the rank of Full Professor at the University of Toronto, Department of Medicine, Division of Neurology, and be eligible to hold a clinician scientist position based at UHN- Krembil Brain Institute. The appointment and re-appointment process of the Chair will follow the University of Toronto Policy and Procedures for Academic Appointments, and the University Policy on Endowed and Limited Term Chairs, Professorships, Distinguished Scholars and Program Initiatives.

The successful candidate must hold a MD degree, hold or be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO), hold certification in Neurology from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) or international equivalent, and have established clinical research program in Epilepsy with a strong genetic component.

The successful candidate will be expected to undertake collaborative research and promote discovery, treatment, and education in genetic epilepsy. The successful candidate will have an established reputation of clinical expertise and be internationally renowned, with a track record of conducting high quality innovative and impactful clinical research to focus on patients with rare genetic epilepsies and common epilepsies with a strong genetic component. The Chairholder will pursue the development of effective treatments for generalized epilepsy syndromes, of which Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy (JME), also known as Janz Syndrome, is the most common form.

The Chair will leverage all enabling tools to advance the area, as tools may evolve over time, and will also ensure knowledge translation efforts are integrated into the work. Through research and scholarly activities, the Chairholder will help position the Krembil Brain Institute as a global leader in knowledge generation and translation in the area of epilepsies. Additional duties will include teaching and supervision of medical trainees, fellows and graduate students. Excellent collaboration, communication, and leadership skills, with demonstrated experience are essential.

The Chairholder receives $1 million in funding over the initial five-year term and is intended to support the Chairholder’s salary and research activities.
