Occupational Therapist (Band 5 or Band 6) – Driving and Mobility Assessment Service

Location: Welwyn Garden City (with regular travel to outreach sites in Watford and Harlow)
Contract: Full Time or Part Time
Salary: £32,073 - £46,580 pro rata, dependent on experience and banding

Our client is seeking an enthusiastic Band 5 or Band 6 Occupational Therapist to join their specialist Driving and Mobility Assessment Service based in Hertfordshire. This unique role offers the opportunity to support individuals whose medical condition, disability, injury, or age may affect their ability to travel safely and independently.

Working alongside Approved Driving Instructors and a multidisciplinary team, you will undertake comprehensive clinical assessments, provide evidence-based recommendations, and help clients maintain or regain safe mobility and independence.

This position is suitable for experienced Band 6 Occupational Therapists as well as Band 5 Occupational Therapists with relevant post-qualification experience who are looking to develop specialist expertise in driving and mobility assessment through structured training and supervision.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out driving and passenger assessments for clients with a wide range of physical, cognitive, neurological, and medical conditions.
  • Assess physical, sensory, cognitive, perceptual, and functional abilities relating to safe driving and travel.
  • Conduct clinical interviews and functional assessments in both clinic and on-road environments.
  • Work jointly with Approved Driving Instructors during practical driving assessments.
  • Apply sound clinical reasoning and professional judgement to determine safe and appropriate outcomes.
  • Provide clear and sensitive feedback to clients, carers, and healthcare professionals.
  • Make recommendations regarding driving safety, vehicle adaptations, passenger travel, and rehabilitation programmes where appropriate.
  • Identify safeguarding concerns and manage risk effectively in line with organisational policies.
  • Produce comprehensive assessment reports and maintain accurate clinical records.
  • Contribute to service development, audits, training activities, and professional networking opportunities.
  • Support the delivery and growth of outreach services across multiple locations.

Requirements

  • Degree or Diploma in Occupational Therapy.
  • Current HCPC registration as an Occupational Therapist.
  • Relevant post-qualification experience.
  • Strong clinical reasoning and risk assessment skills.
  • Excellent written communication and report-writing abilities.
  • Ability to communicate sensitive information with empathy and professionalism.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Willingness and ability to travel regularly between Welwyn Garden City, Watford, and Harlow.
  • Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office applications and electronic record systems.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Understanding of safeguarding responsibilities and professional confidentiality.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience within rehabilitation, neurology, community services, or long-term conditions.
  • Experience completing complex clinical assessments and making autonomous clinical decisions.
