Responsibilities;

  • Develop/Review System Specifications: Design and build detailed specifications for automation systems integrated with Industry 4.0 infrastructure, including IoT-enabled devices, smart sensors, and data platforms for predictive maintenance, quality control, and supply chain optimization
  • Automation Standards Expertise: Apply knowledge of general automation standards (e.g., IEC 61131 for PLC programing, ISO 50001 for energy management in manufacturing, and Japanese-specific standards like JIS B 8430 for industrial robots) to ensure compliance and efficiency in production lines.
  • Convey End-User Needs: Act as the bridge between Sika’s manufacturing teams (as end-users focused on digital transformation) and external systems integrators, translating business requirements into technical scopes, RFPs, and implementation plans to drive seamless adoption of digital tools.
  • OT Protocol Implementation: Hands-on configuration and integration of Operational Technology (OT) protocols such as OPC UA, MQTT, EtherNet/IP to enable secure data exchange between shop-floor equipment and enterprise systems.
  • Project Management and Alignment: Lead cross-functional projects to align a new project in Japan with Sika’s global transformation strategy, including automation, real-time monitoring via industrial devices.
  • Hands-On Technical Work: Perform prototyping, testing, and troubleshooting of automated systems, while collaborating with teams on PLC/DCS programming and IIoT deployments.
  • Communication and Stakeholder Management: Facilitate workshops, presentations, and reports to communicate progress, risks, and benefits to internal stakeholders.
  • Continuous Improvement: Recommend upgrades to enhance productivity and reduce downtime.

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
  • Experience: 5+ years in manufacturing engineering. Experience in Automation or Digitalization in Industry
  • Technical Skills:
    • More than 5 years of practical experience in the design, implementation, operation, and improvement of two or more following systems.
      • MES
      • SCADA
      • DCS
      • WMS
      • TMS
    • Practical experience in analyzing and improving a set of manufacturing KPIs, including those related to the supply chain.
  • Soft Skills: Excellent management and communication abilities to align diverse teams, negotiate with integrators, and present complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences. Bilingual proficiency in Japanese and English.

Locations: Nakahara plant (Hiratsuka, Kanagawa) *possibly move to Tochigi prefecture later

Organization: Engineer and Maintenance (17 people)

Report to: Engineering manager (Japanese)

Subordinate: None

Travelling: 10% at mainly domestic

Working style: Flexible time (Hybrid: 2 to 3 days per week at WFH)
