Job Description

Position Summary:

The Cultural Resources Data Coordination Specialist serves as a liaison between Tribal Cultural Specialists (TCSs), CEMML Field Directors, and the SCOPE GIS data team. The role focuses on facilitating effective communication, supporting TCS coordination efforts, and ensuring that field observations and Tribal feedback is properly translated into requests or updates for data processing.  This position is designed to support TCS engagement and field coordination—not to perform advanced GIS or data management functions.

CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University (CSU). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and within CSU to resolve complex environmental issues, leaving a legacy of science-based decisions that sustain our resources for future generations. Essential Job Duties:

  • Serve as a field liaison between TCSs and project teams during coordination, site reviews, and revisits.
  • Facilitate conversations with TCS personnel to ensure perspectives, concerns, and observations are clearly communicated.
  • Assist with planning and execution of Tribal site visits and revisits.
  • Work with the SCOPE data team to relay updates, corrections, and new information gathered from Tribal coordination.
  • Help translate field observations and Tribal feedback to ensure it is accurately conveyed and reflected in AGOL online forms, data layers, and project workflows.
  • Support group review sessions (e.g., Teams-based desktop analysis) to refine revisit priorities and reduce unnecessary field effort.
  • Maintain awareness of project status at a high level (e.g., what areas have been visited, what needs follow-up), without owning the underlying data systems.

Conditions of Employment:

  • This position is required to accompany field crews during 2-week field rotations occurring between March and November. Travel may be required to any of the project locations across the western United States. This position must remotely integrate with CEMML’s existing team of GIS, Natural Resources, and Cultural Resources Specialists located at CEMML headquarters in Colorado.
  • Ability to lift 25 pounds and traverse uneven, steep terrain.
  • Must have a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain a driver's license by the employment start date.
  • Must be able to comply with all applicable regulations to obtain a Department of Defense Common Access Card (CAC) and public trust clearance.
  • Candidates are required at a minimum to complete a NACI/SF85 and successfully pass a federal background check to remain eligible for employment by CSU.
  • No Foreign nationals shall be employed without prior approval of the Government.
  • Pre-employment Criminal Background Check (required for all new hires).

Supervision:

None

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in anthropology, archaeology, ethnography, geography, GIS, or related field.
  • 3-years of archaeological field experience that demonstrates a knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology.
  • Professional experience using mobile ArcGIS applications, including Field Maps, Smart Forms, Survey123, Dashboards, and/or Experience Builder.
  • Experience deploying mobile GIS data collection tools to collect cultural resource field data, or similar.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with cultural resources workflows or Tribal consultation processes.
  • Experience participating in or supporting field surveys or site visits.
  • Greater than 3-years of relevant professional experience.
  • Familiarity with content management systems such as Box, SharePoint, or other similar software.
  • Basic familiarity with geospatial concepts or project tracking tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain trust with Tribal partners.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including experience in culturally sensitive environments.
  • Experience supporting Tribal coordination, cultural resources work, or field-based engagement.
  • Ability to clearly convey information between technical teams and non-technical partners.
