LOCATION:  Albuquerque, NM

STATUS:  Exempt

POSITION STATEMENT: 

The Corps Ministry Youth Leader will assume a variety of responsibilities geared towards providing relevant and meaningful programs and activities for youth who are part of the congregation, clients and volunteers.  This position will reflect a significant emphasis on program and relational ministry including program planning and anticipated outcomes.   

QUALFICATIONS:

  • Possess a college degree or hold ministry certificate in leadership or be able to show equivalent ministry experience.
  • Must be a Salvation Army Soldier in good standing
  • Must speak Spanish and English
  • Knowledge of The Salvation Army beliefs and practices and be in agreement and live in accordance with TSA and Biblical standards is required.
  • Demonstrated experience in working with others in either a team or supervisory role.
  • Demonstrated ability in program planning and management especially with youth
  • Ability to relate to youth in emotional crisis and to utilize crisis intervention skills.
  • Ability to complete documentation accurately in a timely manner, possess time management skills.
  • Must be able to work independently, be organized, and detail oriented.
  • Computer literate in MS Office Software
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Pass a criminal background check.
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude & an ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds & circumstances
  • Able to maintain a non-judgmental demeanor, using a professional approach and maintaining boundaries with clients
  • Have a current and valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.

RESPONSIBIITIES:

Discipleship

  • Ensure there is a regular discipleship program for youth
  • Recruit leaders and either coordinate or personally train leaders in culture and program
  • Plan and lead spiritual meetings for all youth members/potential members, to include preaching/teaching
  • Plan leadership meetings with Corps youth leaders, leading and keeping records of same
  • Be available for one-on-one pastoral youth care as needed

Outreach

  • Network and connect the youth with Corps programs (i.e. Sunday School, Corps Cadets, outreach events, VBS,) developing creative ways to engage the local population, ultimately having them be involved in the Corps programs.
  • Develop and start new youth programs – to include connecting the volleyball team, starting a drumline group, and connecting with the local soccer team for our field use.
  • Visit families associated with current Corps programs.
  • Coordinate VBS and/or summer day camp.
  • Oversee all community related programs related to the Spanish speaking congregation.
  • Recruit community volunteers
  • Be visionary in developing programs that will meet the needs of the community youth.
  • Represent The Salvation Army on local boards, committees, etc., as needed to effectively increase the visibility of The Salvation Army to the local community.
  • Transport to and from Corps programs and or arrange for alt transportation.
  • Assist in the running of the annual Christmas Kettle program

Administration

  • Review and prepare annual budget for youth ministries in conjunction with ABQ Metro Corps Command
  • Ensure facilities are kept safe and in good working condition
  • Manage and maintain assigned vehicle/s in good working order and ensure no one drives TSA vehicles without clearance from DHQ.
  • Receive and process invoices related to the operation of the Corps in a timely manner
  • Oversee and management employees/volunteers assigned to the youth ministry

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, stand, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl and reach with hands and arms on a continuous basis.  The employee must regularly life and/or move 20 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 40 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 60 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception and an ability to adjust focus.  Must have the ability to operate telephone, a desktop or laptop computer, as well as the ability to access and produce information from a computer and to understand written information.
