Job Description Summary

The Clinic NMT Radiation Safety Coordinator works with the Director, Cardiologists, and other personnel to supervise and perform the technical procedures and daily activities in the Nuclear Medicine area within the clinic. These functions include all diagnostic procedures, licensing requirements, use, handling, disposal and storage of all radioisotopes and process management.

Essential Functions

• Perform tests for diagnosis and medical research.
• Prepare and give radiopharmaceuticals to patients.
• Use high-level imaging equipment to record images of the radioactive material in the body.
• Reviews each examination for technical accuracy, presents completed examination to radiologist and communicates pertinent data to persons responsible for the care of the patient following the procedure.
• Takes the initiative to ensure one’s own competency with each exam.
• Records pertinent data or radiographic requisitions at all times. (Physician’s name, technologist’s name, date, explanation for limited examination, etc.).
• Orders, receives, documents and disposes of all radioactive materials for the use of requested procedures in Nuclear Medicine following state and Nuclear Medicine rules and regulations.
• Performs daily, weekly or as needed calibration of imaging equipment and instruments following state and department regulations.
• Ability to perform all requested Nuclear Medicine procedures on patients following criteria set by the state and Nuclear Medicine department.
• Explains procedures to patients.
• Manages all information obtained with strict confidentiality to safeguard patient information from use by unauthorized personnel.
• Follows Southeast Health Center’s safety guidelines for self, patients, visitors, and employees.
• Follows Southeast Health Center’s infection prevention policies.
• Independently handles communications in a manner, which decreases conflict.
• Is familiar with and follows hospital wide Radiation Policy and rules set forth by the Alabama Department of Public Health Division of Radiation Control
• Uses the PACS System in documenting correctly and accurately patient                   information to insure the quality of patient care.
• Uses the computer system correctly in charging the correct patient account with correct exams and supplies.
• Demonstrates the ability to perform all exams in the department.  Has taken the initiative to insure one’s own competency with each exam.
• Reports to the Radiation Safety Officer and Radiation Safety coordinator, for the practice, on all Radiation Safety issues.
• When requested, aids the Radiation Safety Officer and Radiation Safety coordinator by providing information about exam volume, sealed sources, ect.
• Maintains proper level of supplies and Isotopes.  
• Identifies, documents, and reports any incident or unsafe condition.
• May provide leadership to subordinates.
• Performs other duties as requested by primary manager that do not compromise moral code of conduct or protocols set in place for patient or employee safety

Qualifications

Minimum Education Required

• Registered as either Nuclear Medicine Technologist by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board, Inc. (NMTCB).
• Graduate of a recognized Nuclear Medicine program.
• CPR Certification

Minimum Education Preferred

• Completion of a undergraduate degree

Minimum Experience Required

• Minimum three (3) years Nuclear Medicine experience.

Minimum Experience Preferred

• Two (2) or more years of supervisory experience

• Ability to use technology.
• Ability to work large pieces of electronic equipment and must be comfortable operating them

• Demonstrates the ability to perform all exams in the department to include General Nuclear Medicine, Cardiology Nuclear Medicine, and PET/CT
• Demonstrated ability to communicate with all levels of staff: doctors, medical physicists, nuclear pharmacists, computer specialists, nurses, and administrative staff.
• Demonstrates the knowledge and ability to provide age-specific care to the following age groups in the clinical setting by observation.
• Basic typing and computer skills.
• Experience in operating personal computers in a Windows environment.
• Customer service oriented.
• Annual completion of competency requirements.
