Looking for casual security work in the Lockyer Valley?

Join the security team at The University of Queensland’s Gatton Campus and help protect a welcoming, diverse and unique rural university community.

We are establishing an ongoing pool of suitably qualified Casual Security Officers to support UQ Gatton’s 24/7 security operations.

Depending on operational requirements, some successful applicants may progress to appointment and training immediately, while others may be contacted as opportunities arise throughout the year. Casual shifts may be offered following completion of the required training to cover planned and unplanned staff leave, major events and peak operational periods.

Please note that inclusion in the casual pool does not guarantee appointment, a minimum number of hours or regular shifts. Work availability will vary throughout the year, and some shifts may be offered at short notice.

About This Opportunity

As a Casual Security Officer, you will provide professional and responsive security services across UQ’s Gatton Campus.

The Gatton security team supports a 24/7 operation, with officers responding to incidents, completing campus patrols, securing buildings, assisting staff, students and visitors, and supporting emergency responses.

Gatton operates with smaller shift teams, so you will need to be comfortable working independently, exercising sound judgement and remaining connected with central security operations at St Lucia.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Responding to alarms, medical emergencies, fire emergencies and other incidents

  • Conducting campus patrols and securing University buildings and rural grounds

  • Providing access to authorised personnel

  • Responding professionally to enquiries and concerns from staff, students and visitors

  • Escalating urgent or high-priority matters to the Security Supervisor

  • Supporting the enforcement of parking and traffic regulations

  • Conducting preliminary investigations as directed

  • Preparing clear, detailed and accurate incident reports

  • Performing other reasonable duties as directed by the security leadership team

About You

You will be a calm, reliable and professional security officer who can confidently make decisions and work with minimal supervision.

To be eligible, you must hold:

  • A current Queensland Certificate II in Security Operations

  • HLTAID011 Provide First Aid

  • HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation

  • A current Queensland manual open driver licence

You will also demonstrate:

  • The ability to work independently within a 24/7 operational environment

  • Sound judgement and confident decision-making

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills

  • Professionalism, tact and restraint when managing challenging situations

  • Experience responding to emergency or operational incidents

  • Confidence using security monitoring systems

  • The ability to prepare accurate reports and maintain appropriate records

  • A genuine commitment to providing a safe and welcoming campus environment

Important Training Requirement

Successful applicants must be available to attend an initial five-week period of full-time training.

Following completion of training, any work offered will be casual and based on operational requirements. The training requirement does not mean that ongoing full-time hours will be available.

Successful candidates will be required to complete background checks, including verification of their right to work in Australia and a criminal history check

You must maintain unrestricted work rights in Australia for the duration of this appointment to apply. Employer sponsored work rights are not available for this appointment.
