  • Full-time position, fixed term for 3 years

  • Base Salary from $109,301 (level A) or $122,830 (level B) 17% superannuation 

About the opportunity

The Hayes Lab (Ancestry & Health Genomics Lab) located within the Charles Perkins Centre at the University of Sydney is hiring! We are looking for a self-driven cancer computational biologist to join an internationally funded, highly diverse cancer, population and computational genomic team focused on determining the underlying contributions to prostate cancer health disparities.

The successful candidate should have a PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, or an equivalent field. They should have a proven high-quality track-record and strong expertise in bioinformatics and big data analytics with a required focus on cancer genomics, including cancer genomic complexity from interrogation of structural variations, copy number variation to complex genomic rearrangements. The candidate should demonstrate expertise and interest in developing analytical workflows, while demonstrating ability to translate computational biology into scientific and clinical advances. Experience in the analysis of both short- and long-read data sources would be encouraged.

The successful candidate should be looking to launch their career within an established 3-year consortia-based project focused on prostate cancer health disparities. The candidate would be expected to lead the required genomic complexity and associated statistical analytics, disseminate their findings via both publication and presentation to the research community, work independently and within a larger multi-omic and multi-disciplinary team, including geographically dispersed members, co-supervise honours and postgraduate students, while being encouraged to develop longer-term research goals and an independent career path.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • conduct original research independently or as part of a team, focusing on publication, conference presentations, and securing research funding

  • maintain a research profile, including publication of peer-reviewed journal articles, conference and/or seminar papers

  • develop research collaborations and engage in translational research that result in knowledge or technology transfer leading to improved policy or practice, or enhancement to industry, the profession or community

  • maintain quality, standards and excellence in research activities and output

  • provide informal mentoring and guidance to lower-level academics and supervise postgraduate research students or projects where appropriate

  • undertake other duties appropriate within the classification level as required.

About you

  • doctorate or PhD in a relevant field

  • proven experience conducting original research and engaging in scholarly activity

  • a developing network of academic, industry and professional partners and stakeholders

  • a developing research profile

  • proven experience supervising and mentoring others

  • experience in teaching and learning, as evidenced by participation in team teaching and teaching in a variety of settings.
