Job Description Summary:

The Associate Program Manager (APM) provides operational and administrative support for the day-to-day activities of the lab to ensure efficient workflow and successful execution of research projects. Working under the direction of the Lab Director, this position coordinates laboratory operations, maintains project records, assists with project planning and implementation, supports student research teams, and serves as a liaison with William & Mary offices as needed. The APM helps identify operational challenges, recommends process improvements, contributes to literature reviews and background research, assists with budget tracking, and performs quality assurance activities to support the lab's research mission.

The Nutritional Epidemiology and Food System Analytics (NEFSA) lab conducts research to understand the relationship between nutrition, health, and sustainability. NEFSA researchers combine methods from nutrition science, agricultural science, economics, and data science to answer these questions using computational tools. We receive generous support from diverse funding partners, including the National Institutes of Health, Department of Agriculture, Jeffress Trust Awards Program in Research Advancing Health Equity, and multiple industry partners. This work is designed to inform multiple stakeholders, including clinicians, public health practitioners, scientists, journalists, and policy makers.

NEFSA is housed within the Department of Health Sciences at William & Mary (W&M), which is the oldest public university in the US (established 1693), and is consistently ranked as one of the top ten public universities in the United States. Job Description:

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education, experience, and training.

  • Working knowledge of quantitative research methods.

  • Demonstrated proficiency with spreadsheet applications, word processing, and desktop publishing software.

  • Working knowledge of data management procedures and institutional software programs.

  • Strong organizational, communication, and time-management skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in a research lab setting.

  • Experience managing professional projects.

  • Experience working in health sciences or a related field.

Conditions of Employment: 

  • This is a non-exempt position, eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act. This position may be subject to overtime during high peak times, etc. as directed and approved by the supervisor.

Job Duties:

40% - Project Management:

  • Manage multiple and diverse assignments in a team environment.

  • Plan, organize, execute, and track progress of lab functions in coordination with the lab Director.

  • Identify issues and recommend process improvements and solutions.

  • Maintain project documentation and records.

30% - Student Team Coordination:

  • Coordinate and support undergraduate student research assistants.

  • Work directly with team members to ensure that deadlines are met.

  • Coordinate weekly progress reports from team members.

  • Respond to questions and serve as a key point of contact for team members.

  • Schedule internal and external meetings, and book meeting rooms when needed.

20% - Communications:

  • Communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with team members and university offices.

  • Draft internal memos and presentations of research outcomes.

  • Record meeting notes and track follow-up items.

  • Assist in preparing written research materials and reports.

5% - Research Design & Analytics:

  • Implement research or data collection methodology.

  • Contribute to literature reviews.

  • Provide background research inputs.

5% - Quality Assurance:

  • Develop knowledge of QA procedures and methodology.
