About This Opportunity  

Join a collaborative and purpose-driven team contributing to world-class biomedical and scientific research. As an Animal Technical Officer, you will provide specialist animal care, husbandry and technical services that enable safe, ethical and high-quality research outcomes. Working closely with researchers, students and colleagues, you will help foster a supportive, service-focused environment where animal welfare, compliance and operational excellence are central to daily activities.

Key responsibilities will include:  

• Deliver high standards of animal care and husbandry for laboratory animals, including colony management, breeding programs, animal monitoring and accurate record keeping.

• Perform routine and specialised technical procedures to support animal-based research, including administering treatments and restricted drugs, sample collection, euthanasia, and the application of approved animal ethics practices.

• Maintain animal facilities, cages, and if required pens and aquatic systems to the highest standards of cleanliness, biosecurity and regulatory compliance, ensuring adherence to relevant microbiological, safety and research requirements.

• Support researchers, staff and students through training, inductions and the provision of specialist technical advice, fostering a collaborative and service-focused research environment.

• Contribute to the safe and effective operation of the facility through professional communication, incident response, alarm monitoring and the timely reporting of critical information.

About You  

• Relevant qualifications in Veterinary Technology, Animal Technology, post-trades certificate, or an equivalent combination of relevant education, training and experience.

• At least two years' experience working in animal care facilities, including laboratory animal care and handling and/or recirculating aquaculture systems

• Demonstrated experience with animal handling techniques, husbandry practices and facility procedures relevant to research environments.

• Knowledge of breeding practices, genetic management and maintaining accurate records for aquatic or laboratory animal colonies.

• Demonstrated competence in specialised animal procedures including injections, sample collection, administering treatments and euthanasia.

• Knowledge of and ability to apply industry regulatory requirements including OH&S, OGTR, DAFF and AEC requirements.

• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build effective working relationships with researchers, students, staff and suppliers.

• Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise work, work independently and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment.
