Animal Care Technician

<p><span style="color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 1); font-style: normal; text-align: left; text-indent: 0">Provides general care for shelter animals, including enrichment, feeding, cleaning, exercising, monitoring, disinfecting, and grooming. With direction, may assist with vaccinations, microchipping, and medicating shelter animals.</span>&nbsp;</p><p style="color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 1); font-style: normal; text-align: left; text-indent: 0"><strong>ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:</strong></p><ul style="color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 1); font-style: normal; text-align: left; text-indent: 0; margin-bottom: 3pt"><li>Cleans and maintains animal kennels and cages and provides a clean and safe environment for the animals and citizens. This includes feeding, handling, and provision of custodial care.</li><li>Handling large and aggressive animals using various animal care and control equipment including catch poles, leashes, muzzles, traps.</li><li>Assist in giving basic shelter medical treatment to animals in shelter care.</li><li>Assist loading and unloading of animals and supplies.</li><li>Receives animals turned in by the public and Animal Control Officers while completing all proper intake procedures.</li><li>Completes and files all required paperwork and data entry into the animal services data base management system in accordance with procedures in a timely manner.</li><li>Maintains shelter property by picking up trash, organizing supplies, and other various needed maintenance.</li><li>Tracks shelter supply inventory and notifies Manager of supplies when needed.</li><li>Cross-trains with administrative staff.</li><li>Cross-train with animal control and shows willingness to assist with animal control calls as necessary.</li><li>Perform all other related duties as assigned.</li></ul><p style="color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 1); font-style: normal; text-align: left; text-indent: 0"><strong>MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:</strong></p><p style="color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 1); font-style: normal; text-align: left; text-indent: 0"><strong>Knowledge of:</strong>&nbsp;</p><ul style="color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 1); font-style: normal; text-align: left; text-indent: 0; margin-bottom: 3pt"><li>Knowledge of basic construction methods</li><li>Handling large and aggressive animals using various animal care and control equipment including catch poles, leashes, muzzles, traps.</li><li>Physical and behavioral characteristics of common dogs, cats, livestock, and exotic animals.</li><li>Animal care, feeding and handling.</li><li>Animal disease and prevention.</li></ul><p style="color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 1); font-style: normal; text-align: left; text-indent: 0"><strong>Skills:</strong> &nbsp;</p><ul style="color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 1); font-style: normal; text-align: left; text-indent: 0; margin-bottom: 3pt"><li>Basic animal handling skills and comfort level needed.</li><li>Customer Service Oriented on phones and face to face</li><li>Written and verbal communication skills.</li><li>Computer Skills MS Office.</li><li>Communication with mobile apps.</li></ul><p style="color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 1); font-style: normal; text-align: left; text-indent: 0"><strong>Ability to</strong>:</p><ul style="color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 1); font-style: normal; text-align: left; text-indent: 0; margin-bottom: 3pt"><li>Read and follow written directions</li><li>Administering injections to dogs, cats and wild animal is strongly preferred.</li></ul><p style="color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 1); font-style: normal; text-align: left; text-indent: 0"><strong>Education:</strong>&nbsp; High school diploma or GED. Continuing education or classes in zoology, animal science, grooming and bathing, care of domestic animals, animal advocacy, preferred.</p><p style="color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 1); font-style: normal; text-align: left; text-indent: 0"><strong>Experience:</strong></p><ul style="color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 1); font-style: normal; text-align: left; text-indent: 0; margin-bottom: 3pt"><li>One year experience working with animals required.</li><li>Valid Texas driving license required.</li></ul><p style="color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 1); font-style: normal; text-align: left; text-indent: 0"><em>Any work-related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above-specified education and experience requirements.</em></p>
