Job description
The Admissions Counselor at High Point University serves as an integral member of the Office of Undergraduate Admissions team, responsible for managing and strategically developing an assigned geographic territory to support the University’s enrollment goals. This position plays a key role in identifying, recruiting, admitting, and enrolling academically qualified students who align with the mission and values of High Point University.

The Admissions Counselor will design and execute a comprehensive recruitment plan, actively representing the University at on- and off-campus events, high schools, college fairs, and other outreach initiatives. A successful candidate will maintain frequent and meaningful contact with prospective students, parents, and school counselors, demonstrating professionalism, empathy, and a deep understanding of students’ varied needs throughout the admissions process. This role requires excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills, as well as a commitment to providing exceptional service and guidance to prospective students and their families.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree required

Experience and Training:

  • Experience in admissions counseling, sales or customer service preferred

Knowledge, Skills, Ability:

  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office product and the Internet
  • Ability to travel extensively
  • Valid driver license with good driving record; must be insurable.

Essential Functions:  

  • Creates Strategic Plan for attracting students with the right academic qualifications, from target high schools in assigned territory
  • Sets goals for assigned territory in regards to inquiries, applications, campus visitors, accepted students and enrolled students
  • Makes travel arrangements and manages travel schedule to visit target schools within travel budget
  • Travels 5-7 weeks in the fall and 2-3 weeks in the spring attending college fairs and private visits to targeted schools
  • Builds relationships with key high school guidance counselors and independent counselors in assigned territory; invites them to visit campus or attend a Counselor Open House at HPU
  • Manages evaluation of all completed files within assigned territory; makes initial admit/deny/waitlist decisions for prospective students
  • Meets with students and families after campus tours explaining application process, scholarship opportunities, study abroad, presidents seminar and answering all questions
  • Uses technical resources and predictive modeling to make informed decisions about student’s applications and outreach
  • Develops and maintains in-depth, up-to-date knowledge of the University’s academic and extracurricular programs
  • Develops and maintains expertise to conduct campus tours; goes through tour shadowing program; conducts tours whenever needed
  • Handles assigned duties during Admissions Events during the year: Open Houses, Early Registrations, Presidential Scholarship Program, Spirit Event, etc.
  • Contributes to Admissions Team efforts by assisting other counselors as time permits
  • Maintains positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating effectively with students, students’ parents, faculty, co-workers and managers
  • Other duties as assigned
