Lead Embedded Software Engineer

Wotton under Edge

up to £55,000 depending on experience

Renishaw’s CMM and Gauging Products Division is seeking a Senior or Lead Embedded Software Engineer to develop and maintain real-time software to control high-speed, high-accuracy automated measurement systems.

The role involves designing software from low-level registers to systems architecture, implementing control and measurement algorithms, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, and troubleshooting code.

Candidates should have experience in modern C++ and C for embedded systems, a solid understanding of software design, and a passion for solving complex problems. Desirable skills include familiarity with Git, Azure DevOps, multithreaded programming, security and a background in mathematics and electronic engineering. The ideal candidate will be a clear communicator, self-motivated, detail-oriented, and committed to continuous learning and improvement.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop real-time software to control automated measurement systems and associated sensors to achieve cutting-edge system performance.

  • Help design and architect new and existing software from register to system level, to meet requirements and specifications.

  • Understand existing algorithms and how they influence system performance and make improvements.

  • Work with multi-disciplinary teams developing new sensors and systems, develop the software and algorithms needed to make best use of them.

  • Conduct design and code reviews and develop unit and integration tests.

  • Write design documentation of a high standard.

  • Liaise with application and product-support engineers to diagnose and fix issues found in the field.

Key requirements

  • Experience of modern C++ and C for embedded systems.

  • A clear understanding of software design and architecture.

  • A desire to write high-quality software.

  • A genuine interest in developing and using your knowledge to solve problems in an innovative way.

  • The ability to work in a team and to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing.

  • A degree or equivalent experience in engineering, computer science or a related discipline.

Desirable requirements

  • Experience of Git / Azure change and project management systems.

  • Knowledge of unit testing and test-driven development.

  • Multithreaded programming in real-time operating systems.

  • Knowledge of TCP/IP and embedded security issues and strategies.

  • A desire for continuous improvement of processes and practices.

  • Abilities in mathematics.
