Job Description Summary

GE Vernova's Power Conversion & Storage business provides electrification systems that are critical to customers’ power and energy needs for their high-performance applications. We work with some of the world’s major energy, maritime, and industrial organizations, helping to enable a transition to energy efficiency and decarbonization, including through our specialist motors, drives, and control technologies.

Job Description

As the Lead Wind Converter Upgrades Engineer, your role will be to carry out modernization work on wind turbine converter systems. You will venture to client sites as a member of a cross-functional team carrying out upgrades. Although the main focus will be on upgrading existing wind convertors, this roll sits within the service organisation and there may be a requirement to work on other types of upgrade projects.  Typical scope of these projects includes Medium Voltage & Low Voltage converters, motors, transformers, E-house, switchgear, and control, as well as the associated power systems engineering.

In this role you will focus on:

  • Designing, commissioning, testing, troubleshooting, and remotely diagnosing wind turbine converters and associated power equipment.

  • Performing troubleshooting activities at site locations to diagnose problems, determine appropriate resolutions, and implement corrective actions.

  • Utilizing internal software to write PLC/converter code using industry-standard function blocks.

  • Marking up and reviewing AutoCAD and EPLAN drawings.

  • Setting up hardware in a lab environment and demonstrating Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs) to both internal and external customers.

  • Communicating progress of projects to the engineering management team.

  • This role combines office work with domestic and international travel (5-10% of work time spent traveling).

Essential qualifications:

  • A relevant degree (minimum HNC, HND, BEng, or BSc) in Electrical Engineering or equivalent qualifications, or some experience in an industrial electrical engineering environment.

  • Basic knowledge of PLC programming principles.

  • An understanding of power conversion principles for wind turbine converters.

  • An aptitude for learning and development in their role in an ever-evolving branch of technology (growth mindset).

What will make you stand out:

  • Solid experience in heavy industry environments, particularly in wind energy.

  • Knowledge of integrated control schemes with switchgear, protection, PLCs, HMIs, and converters.

  • Experience in commissioning wind turbine converter systems.

  • Power systems experience with relation to transformers and switchgear.

You can expect from us:

  • Challenging and exciting projects.

  • A work environment where we understand that not everyone has the same expectations about their jobs, careers, and work-life balance, and we are happy to discuss flexibility requirements.

  • Attractive compensation.

  • Flexible benefits so you can build a package that fits your personal needs. Some core benefits are: Employer pension contribution (not subject to individual contribution), Income protection, Private Health Insurance, and Life Assurance.

  • 26 days vacation + bank holidays.

  • Career progression opportunities along multiple paths within a large and varied organization.

This role involves work for customers who manage critical infrastructure; based on customer requirements it will be necessary to carry out background checks and suitability assessments (UK BPSS clearance OR UK SC clearance) as part of the hiring process.
