What does the team do
In the Haptics and Dexterity Team, we are empowering Ocado’s robots to enable full automation in Grocery Shopping.
In this position, you will be leading the development and architecture of the software that operates our novel mechatronics devices from the early stages of development. You will play a key role in the design of highly dexterous manipulation algorithms.
What will I be doing?
You will also be responsible for the integration of the software and hardware components and collaborate into the testing required to validate the correct operation of the devices.
The roles and responsibilities of this role include:

Collaborating on system architecture design (software and hardware)
-
Participating effectively in investigating and implementing sensor-driven robotics solutions to specific automation problems.

Apply your ML expertise to solve problems within robotics and manipulation domains.
-
Developing algorithms and behaviours that will improve our manipulation capabilities.
-
Taking an active role in the choice of technologies and techniques used in the delivery of robotics application demonstrators.
-
Designing and implementing systems integration software to suit the functionality of custom designed hardware
-
Integrating and developing robotic components to enhance the capabilities of our robotic solutions.

Designing interfaces with the hardware components.
-
Testing, validation and verification of complete software/hardware system performance
-
Working collaboratively with other team members with expertise in other engineering disciplines
What we are looking for
-
PhD or MSc plus relevant working experience
-
Good software engineering skills: ability to write clean and reusable code
-
Demonstrable experience in developing software in C++ and python
-
Machine Learning experience: supervised, unsupervised and reinforcement learning.

Knowledge and interest on interfacing with robots and mechatronics devices
-
Experience on designing and delivering APIs
-
Familiarity with containerization applications like Docker
-
Knowledge of Design Patterns
-
Knowledge of Real Time systems.

Experience with, and understanding of, computer systems scheduling and resource allocation including:

Process and thread management
-
Inter-process communication and synchronisation
-
Semaphores
-
Shared memory
-
Handling interrupts
-
Direct memory access
-
Multi-core processing
-
Remote procedure calls

Experience of writing device drivers

An appreciation of the principles involved in hardware and software co-design

Experience with common software development tools and practices (e.g. source control, code peer review, etc.)

Experience with CI/CD
Bonus points if you have…

Software experience working with robotic arms or end effectors for manipulation tasks

Understanding of the trade-offs involved in realising a particular functionality in the various technology domains (viz. electronic/mechanical/software)

Experience developing on Ubuntu Linux / ROS

Knowledge of Robotics, i.e. Robot kinematics, Dynamics, Control, etc.
